Further Update on Severe Hip Pain and Insufficiency Fracture

I went for a DEXA Scan yesterday. When it was finished I asked the operator if she had the results. She said they had to be checked by the radiologist and then sent to the rheumatologist. I pressed her to give me the results unofficially and to my utter relief she said "You Do Not Have Osteoporosis!" I am so relieved. I have spent the last few weeks worrying about my spine disintegrating. I nursed my Mother through several crush fractures of her spine so my fears were not groundless.

I have an appointment with the rheumatologist next month and maybe he will have some ideas as to what caused the insufficiency fracture in my hip, but in the meantime I am happy that the rest of my bones seem reasonably sound.

Think I might want to speak to an expert in bone - rather than a rheumy...

Not sure how to get to see one though.

Well, an orthopod at least - in the UK it would be a referral to the fracture clinic for a start.

I am hoping when I see the rheumatologist and get the full report of the DEXA scan he will refer me to whoever I should see! In the meantime I have no pain. It stopped as suddenly as it started!

How very strange!!! But welcome!!!!!!!!!

I am glad for you. So now it’s just all the things to support bone health, like exercise, calcium, vit D, vit K2.

Exercise is the difficult one because of this pre existing condition. I have only been able to walk short distances for some years with our ending up incapacitated for days, so I was quite nervous about the DEXA scan results. I have always been mindful of my diet though and since my PMR diagnosis I have been taking calcium citrate, vit D3 and K2 which I learnt about from this forum very early on. I hope others with mobility problems can take heart from this.

Hurrah! What good news for you. What a great relief after all the dread.
