O No I only been and done it!!. Update

Update on my post 3 months ago. I had gained 2 stone in weight due to steroids in only 18 months.

So I joined slimming world on line. Very pleased to report I have lost just over a stone. I won’t pretend it was easy. I struggled at times but feel so much better and clothes more comfortable.

Also have reduced steroids to 7mg.

So good all round. Plan to loose at least another half stone, maybe more.

I was already overweight when I started on pred on 31st July 2017. I shamelessly gave in to the overwhelming hunger and, like you, gained an extra 2 stone very quickly. I first put a curb on it last October when I gave up eating added sugar and white carbs. I quickly lost some weight. I then joined my local Slimming World group in the New Year and attended for 12 weeks. During that time I managed to lose nearly all of the post-pred weight. However I am still overweight and have grasped the nettle that to reduce further, I have to embrace the very low carb approach, like PMRPro and others on this forum. Giving up cake and chocolate was easier than I expected, what's hard is cutting right down on the root vegetables, especially my beloved parsnips...

Have a look at The Obesity Code by Jason Fung, a Canadian nephrologist. Very enlightening! It makes a great deal of sense and will ease your path to treading lighter!

I'm ashamed to say that I've had a copy of this book for some time, but haven't yet read it. In view of your recommendation, I'll start reading it today!

My sister and her husband each lost a pile of weight using NOOM on their cell phones.

You input items you eat and drink and it counts the calories for you. If the item has a bar code, you can just swipe the bar code.

It also has a step counter and lets you enter other exercise ( e.g. swimming). It lets you know how much more calories are left till your max for the day.

She would look at her phone and decide whether she wanted a cocktail before dinner or to share a dessert after dinner.

NOOM also designated foods as green yellow or red (depending on how calorie dense they are, or maybe their glycemic index, I’m not sure.)

We spent a week together on a Caribbean holiday, eating out, drinking rum punches, etc, and she didn’t gain an ounce!

She lost almost 25 # and her husband over 40. I’m impressed. It isn’t a free app, but is pretty reasonable.

Probably very useful for healthy people - but I'd have doubts about it being entirely helpful for patients on pred where calories aren't the critical factor. It is carbs that matter for more than one reason.

That may be where the red, yellow and green come in.

BTW, this sister suffers from auto-immune illnesses, too - ulcerative colitis, psoriasis and sarcoidosis - just not PMR. Yet.

Well done, did you follow the standard plan which would include carbs?

SuziCutie profile image

Yes as first but didn’t loose much weight. So cut out as much as possible carbs. No biscuits, cake, cut right down on potatoes. No bread at all. No chocolate. Absolutely love carrots and parsnips so fill up on those.

I am loosing on average 1lb a week. Not a lot but I thinking the prednisone interferes with it.

Carbs are addictive. One mouthful and watch out .

I admit to be very hungry at times but determined to lose weight.
