Hi, has anyone successfully managed to lose weight while on steroids. I have put on a stone in just 4 months!

Good morning Mrs. Nails. I've just read your weightloss link you posted in response to Lowercwmtwrch's post and found it very reassuring and helpful. What an achievement too. Although I think you look lovely in your before photo, your transformation is evident in the after pic too. Well done. Having recently experienced some weight gain over the festive season, I know low carb is the way to go, and although that's technically what you did, it was reassuring to see that you weren't strict on cutting carbs out completely, but adapted the diet to suit you. I lost 2lbs last week so I know I'm on the right track.....steady weight loss in small amounts!

You've prompted me to 'post' something so watch this space.

Great, glad it inspired you, the thought of Steroid Induced Diabetes had the disorder effect!

You have to adapt & l find l can’t be too zealous about it as it would only make me miserable & then I’d have failed!

I found some great recipes on ‘Second Nature’ l didn’t join, just used some of their recipes 😉

Good Luck

Quite a few of us - almost all by cutting carbs drastically, especially processed carbs and added sugar and limiting fruit and root veg.

I lost 35lbs some years ago while on between 10 and 15mg - I need to lose more really but have maintained my weight fairly well since then.

MrsNails has written a few posts about her journey to losing 2st last year and there are a lot of people who didn't gain the weight in the first place because they had heard cutting carbs helps a lot. It also helps reduce the craving hunger pangs by reducing the swings in blood sugar levels.

I lost over 3 stone by going low carb and started that on diagnosis nearly 4 years ago and the weight has stayed off

I’ll add another voice to the low carb chorus. I had to go really low carb and didn’t put on any weight even when starting on 60mg. Even without Pred now I still forget to bother with pasta, rice, bread and potato etc after not having had them for three and a half years. With Pred it requires more than eating healthily in the normal sense and even wholemeal bumps up the blood sugar too much for many.

I started to put on weight when I was on 60mg......stopped all carbs (bread, pasta, cakes , biscuits, ) and I was already on a sugar free diet. Haven't gained an ounce.

I followed WW blue plan which is based on low carbs & I lost 11lbs over the first lockdown getting back to my original goal weight....& still managed the odd glass of red wine!

Been there. Done that. Gained a stone but once you get to a lower amount of pred. you won't put on weight. However, the trick is to cut out carbs (white stuff - spuds, rice, bread, etc). I am down to 1 mg and still put on weight esp during lockdown.

I lost over 49lbs on Weight Watchers-the plan I used did limit carbs and I’m sure that helped. Now for me it’s about keeping mobile - moving within your own limits - and remembering to take rest as well as maintaining a sensible diet. Good luck 😊

another thought..perhaps you have water retention...perhaps cut out added salt...spices and herbs are good substitutes.

GOOD LUCK!

Low carb is the answer, and it stops you getting steroid-induced diabetes too. For inspiration read Dr Michael Mosley's The Blood Sugar Diet and/or Fast 800 books they are easy to read and will motivate you

I put on over 20kgs on very high dose pred. Initially 100mg for GCA, then after tapering to 7/8mg went back up to 50mg after a series of strokes caused by GCA. A lot was fluid, extreme moon face. Diets didn’t work while on higher dose pred. I have managed to lose the weight since getting to below 10mg pred. though perhaps I could have tried sooner than this. Michael Mosely’s 800 cal blood sugar diet followed by 5x2 worked. I became diabetic on pred. but my hBA1c is now in normal range.
