Understanding PMR!!!

Is it possible?

PMR mostly effects the muscles we are told. At the moment the worst pain I have is in my shoulders, wrists and knees where there are very few muscles. Ah well!

My spelling is getting worse and worse (affects) and it’s nothing to do with Pred. The odd things that happen when one is getting old - I often say one thing and mean another.

Still not one of the disturbing things about old age, so why worry? But we do, don’t we?

Oh indeed yes .

Well it could be something else but have you tried Googling pictures of those areas? They are packed with muscles! Also, problems in one area can cause pain next door to it, confusing the picture and then you’ve got ligaments and tendons too all attached to the muscles. Others with PMR have mentioned pain in these areas for sure. If it is new pain, it might be worth getting it checked out to rule other things out but it’s more than likely our old friend I’d say.

Hi Constance,

From 2 different sources -

“The most common symptom of polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is pain and stiffness in the shoulder muscles, which develops quickly over a few days or weeks”. And ....

“Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is an inflammatory condition that causes many painful muscles (poly = many, myalgia = muscle pain). Any muscles can be affected, but it mainly affects the muscles of the shoulder and thigh”

What makes you think you have “few” muscles in the areas affected? 🤔

Because I’m thick!!

I’m ashamed about how little I know about the human body.

My doctor over hear (Germany, for those that don’t know), often asks me “what’s ........ in English”?

I know most of the words in German, but not in English.😏 I was rarely ill in England, so never thought about things. Sad case!

hear - here (it’s getting worse and worse)! Of course it’s mostly the spelling checker!😟😟

Just blame the pred, I'm like it now and have usually clicked reply before I see my errors clearly - was always good at English too....

Constance13 profile image
Constance13 in reply toTelian

I click too soon too. As PMR is reducing (fingers crossed) I can’t really blame pred. The trouble is at 79 one worries it’s not something more sinister. Words come out of my mouth that I had no notion of saying, for instance I asked OH to get the “potatoes” out of the fridge. He looked puzzled poor man! Then he asked if I knew what I had just said - so I looked puzzled. Eggs was the word I thought I’d said!! Scary!😟😟

I always say we've too much on our mind rather than anything sinister happening. You'll be fine - potatoes eggs what does it matter.....

Constance13 profile image
Constance13 in reply toTelian

😂😂😂😂😂 It would matter if we wanted egg and chips!

Course it would - you'd want both!

Glad to know I am not alone with thinking 1 thing and something quite different comes out. Weird.

I do that and get names wrong or can't remember I am 67 it does worry you .Until you talk to your friend who is just as bad . ha ha Its frustrating when you can't remember the name of someone you can actually see in your mind . Arrrggghhh Seems its just old age . ;-)

I have always been bad at names and faces. I meet people who greet me like a long lost friend I and I think I have never seen them in my life before! I am very good at remembering numbers and statistics though!

patriciawhite profile image

Isn't it annoying when you get one of those people who uses your name all the time when they talk to you ,Ha ha h a and you stand there frustrated to death not knowing thiers ;-)

I always wish I could do that, I am so bad at names that is an impossibility.

Don't worry Constance - I was a medical translator, I "knew" the word in German, I saw them and the English word came out of my fingers. But ask me half an hour later what the German word for something was - and I hadn't a clue!

Constance13 profile image
Constance13 in reply toPMRpro

I could never be a translator. I write the way I speak, mostly come off OK, but when I have to write I stop and think “now is that accusative or dative” and lose the thread! Luckily David studied German and is extremely interested in language/s so I just pass something I’ve written over to him. He must put his oar in though and explain my mistakes!!! Once a teacher always a teacher!

I don't write German unless desperate! No, no, purely German to English! Here we are often told what perfect German we speak - which we deny and then agree on the grounds that, compared to Pustertalish, our German is pretty perfect...

I have learned BSL sign only level 2 I would like to go further but it's expensive but its funny when I am looking at a paper and trying to translate into sign I have to think sometimes but confronted with a signer I go straight in .

Not thick! ,nobody knows everything .You have two languages ,That's more then most people . If you don't know something' ask here all knowledge and ideas are pooled so we can learn from each other .
