Just to let you know that I have had to postpone my charity ski event due to take place tomorrow, Friday 22nd June, to a new date in September to be confirmed. Regrettably I sustained a fracture to my pelvis earlier this week following a fall from a horse... what was she doing horse riding in the first place I hear you all cry... good question!! The injury will take about 8 weeks to heal before I can start to get fit again, so it will be sometime in September before I can attempt my challenge for the PMRGCAuk charity. My VirginMoneyGiving website will remain open for donations until the 22nd September, so anyone considering making a donation could do so after I have completed the challenge if they would prefer. I WILL complete the challenge, it is just going to be at a much later date!!
Thank you to everyone from this forum who has already made a donation, it is really appreciated and very generous of you, and anyone considering making a donation, no matter how small, I thank you too.
In the meantime I will keep you posted with my recovery progress, although at the moment I am feeling very sorry for myself ๐ค
Best wishes Elizabeth x

I will put it down to brain fog. Definitely not doing that again!! Common sense will prevail, as well as a very grumpy husband who couldn't understand why I was doing it anyway! Serves me right for thinking I am still 25 ๐
At least I can claim that I didnt fall, I was actually bucked off and landed on really hard ground! I have had horses all my life but, you are right, they are unpredictable and much bigger and stronger than we are! Time to accept that I can't do it anymore and hubby would kill me if I did do it again anyway!!!
Can you suggest any other pain killer that I can take alongside Prednisolone (down to 6mg at the moment) other than Paracetamol, which is barely having any effect on my pain level with this injury? It is my understanding that I cannot take Ibuprofen, as it conflicts with the Prednisolone. Any suggestions most welcome, thank you.
You could try co-codamaol. It doesn't do much for my pain but it does help me sleep when the OA is too much. There are a variety of strengths- worth a try.
I took Cocodamol for the first time in my life 3 years ago, just before I was diagnosed with PMR and GCA and it made me really unwell, so much so I spent the day following when I took in bed! Thank you for the suggestion though, much appreciated. I suppose I should really ask my GP to see if there is anything else that I can take that will help wirh the pain. A strong whisky would be good,, but I would probably fall over and make my injury even worse ๐
When I had a broken leg a few years ago I was offered oxycodone, which I refused, but then given Tylenol 3 which is acetaminophen with codeine. It helped and also helped me sleep.
Thank you for your sentiments. I thought the discomforts of PMR and GCA were bad enough, but this is on another scale completely. Roll on the next 8 weeks.
Those are likes meant in sympathy (mine is at least!). Gajin on the forum has been there too - though they were spontaneous pelvic fractures not due to a bucking bronco!
My rheumy here in Italy (a top PMR/GCA person) had me on a week of infusions of a high dose of an NSAID (no idea what it was, something Italian) because of sacroiliitis and spasmed back muscles. I was terrified but he said just take a PPI/ranitidine and you'll be fine. I was!!! It isn't that it conflicts with the pred - both can cause gastric irritation and, potentially, bleeding.
Speak to the doctor - know what you mean about codeine-containing "stuff", yuk! And go to bed and have the whisky!
Thank you, that's very interesting and something to suggest to the GP tomorrow
Ohhhhh tough brake Liz! I am so sorry to hear this!!!! I am so thrilled you were riding a horse... Good on you! I had trouble walking on the pitch at Old Trafford and you're off riding horses! Thoughts and prayers for a quick recovery and thorough healing!
Speedy recovery Elizabeth-hope you are not too sore. Sometimes the pleasure is worth the pain but not if you get bucked off. The ground is like concrete by us at the moment. All good wishes, Irene x
Yes, I am sure the concrete like ground in The New Forest contributed to the severity of my injury. I think I will stick to walking, it has got to be a safer bet!! My fault entirely for buying a 5 year old horse and thinking this was a good idea. I am certain that my Arabian horse from the past wouldn't have dreamt of throwing me off, he was far too polite!
Well they all have their moments- my fairly steady neddy little 16year old mare has been a prancing, snorting diva the last couple of days as in season-again!
The ground is terribly hard and Iโm sure another time you would have been ok. It takes a while to get your confidence and trust in a new horse, especially when you have had a good one for many years Xxx
Elizabeth -Tara is definitely my last riding horse but a friend has two mini spotty ponies that are fabulous. I never saw the point of these little creatures before but they are lovely-you can show them in hand without any of the fear factor (Iโm taking about myself here-Iโm a wimp now) and you still have the tactile effect and gorgeous smell etc -Im odd I know-and they behave like proper horses! So not just a field ornament! Itโs another option for me as I would be very sad without my pony. Itโs hard to give up what you always loved doing xx
I agree, it is very hard to give up something that has been a big part of your life, but nursing this painful injury has made me focus the mind on any future decision making around having a horse ๐
Absolutely, I hope you feel less painful very soon. I have admired your fund raising efforts and determination-I certainly could not ski or walk as you have. Every good wish for a quick recovery Elizabeth and all best wishes for the future with or without horses, whatever you decide.
Elizabeth - it could easily be me in your position and I really do feel sad for your physical pain and as much if not more about your future decisions.
I will stop now - looking forward to hearing that you have completed your ski challenge later in the year๐
Made me laugh, I got thrown the last time I rode and husband couldn't speak to me for hours he was so cross. I was 'separated' from my horse the time before so was under full instructions not to come back without the horse. Yes, the horse made his way back before I got there so hubby had already rung for an ambulance ๐
Isn't it funny how our husbands tend to have a sense of humour failure when it comes to our association with horses. I think the word madness comes to mind ๐
