I'm looking for empathy as I miss out on a weekend that I have been looking forward to for many months. My husband and I were due to drive from Hampshire,UK home to Durham for a reunion with fellow chemists who graduated with us 50 years ago this month. He has gone alone. I am stuck at home with my daughter as helper following a hip replacement on 14th May. I have previously written about how taking Prednisolone for PMR for 3 years had masked the hip deterioration pain. The op went well but 2 days later I had an episode of suspected blood clots making a consult with a cadiologist and comparative CT scan necessary. Thankfully things settled and I was discharged just a day later than expected but on much slower recovery programme and extra blood thinning injections to do. Six days later just as some mobility was returning a painful swelling developed beside the wound and after two trips back to hospital consultant decided it was internal bleeding due to blood thinners and Pred and I am back to a week of total rest. It is frustrating. I am not sleeping more than 2 hours as I have to sleep on my back which I am finding difficult, being I'm a foetal curl sleeper, and once awake the pain returns. Maxing out on painkillers.
The only bonus is sharing time with my IT career daughter who we do not see often.
Thanks for the listening ear. It is good to share.

What a lovely family photo. So sorry you did not make it to Durham, very frustrating for you but at least you are following doctor's orders and that will lead to a quicker recovery, hopefully with out any more set backs. Try to put it all behind you (easier said than done) as you can't changes things try to look to the future and what happy times are ahead. Lack of sleep does not help either, I know the feeling as I too am a side sleeper! Glad you are enjoying your daughter's company. Best wishes for relief from pain and speedy healing. Rae
Lovely photo Valnvaughan. I am sorry that you’ve had to miss your event. I’d love to get one of my daughters to myself, they are always knee deep in children and husbands. Drink her in, it’s special.
You and your husband could plan something really amazing for when you are recovered. I hope your husband will get a few photos for you. I admire your get up and go, I’m afraid that I would just be relieved that I didn’t have to go. But I am a miserable s*d about big events.
Your catalogue of suffering sounds awful. You are all the more incredible for minding the most about a party. 🎈
Thanks. Hubbie and I are planning a special hotel for dinner B&B on our 50th wedding anniversary in August when I hope not to be hobbling.
Also we plan a joint weekend with our best man and wife,. We all met in my first week at Durham in the chemistry lab and they waited for us to return from honeymoon to marry! Lovely.
That’s a lovely story! Who knew that you Chemists were so exiting. I wish I’d persevered with Chemistry for more reasons now. You sound like a great bunch!
What a shame - and a big reunion do it will be no doubt! Comfort yourself that Durham isn't the place for dodgy walkers - too many darned hills by half - and you have a daughter to yourself. I'd love a weekend with one of mone - less sure about the other!!!!
I was in a similar position a year ago. Hip pain was thought to be PMR, perhaps some physio might help. Luckily for me the physio was on the ball and recognised a dodgy hip when he saw one.
I too am a side sleeper. I found I slept better on our day bed, which is much harder than the bed, proped up with cushions . As it is downstairs it saved crawling up to bed.
You will appreciate how lucky we both are when you hear that my father had the same problem and the hip pain was not recognised for what it was until the hip collapsed and he'd been in a wheelchair for two years. It was eventually questioned by an emergency doctor who came when dad fell and was the first to know that this was not just PMR. There are some who know.
Hope all goes well for you. I did find that I had to take the exercise easy or my muscles complained so walking any distance took a bit longer than expected. Good luck.
My prayers are with you for a speedy recovery from the surgery. How miserable to miss such an occasion. I am sending you hugs and lots of understanding.
My mom had a hip replaced. A friend has had both done. They both found sleeping in a recliner helped a great deal. Not sure if that’s an option in your case.
I know when I had surgery I’d alternate at the hosp. The recliner was a blessing.
