Drinking baking soda update

HeronNS posted an article regarding drinking baking soda about 5 days ago that intrigued quite a few of us; however, we were stumped on how much baking soda to how much water.

I reached out to Dr. Paul O'Connor, the researcher, to ask him if he could provide us that information. (See below).

I added it to the Heron's conversation, but was afraid that some might not see it so putting this up. Here's Dr. O'Connor's reply:

"We utilized 2g (about 3/4 of a teaspoon) in 250ml of bottled water (acute) and 600ml of bottled water (over 2 weeks). Given the mechanism appears to be stimulation of acid secretion probably best to drink it in a few parts over the course of a day rather than in one hit.

I want to stress that was a basic science study aimed at mechanisms, not dose or associated risks. I would strongly encourage you to consult with your physician before trying it in any capacity. There can be some serious risks involved. It’s a lot of extra salt and the alkali can cause problems as well in some people.

Paul

My pleasure. I'm used to looking at university websites so it was fairly easy for me to find him. I was just glad that he took the time to answer.

That's interesting, Insight, for me especially the line:

"best to drink it in a few parts over the course of a day rather than in one hit."

I was recommended by a Urologist to drink a glass of water containing 1 tablespoon of bicarb of soda at the first sign of a UTI. When I tried it, I decided that a tablespoonful sounded a bit harsh so I just had 1 teaspoonful in a glass of water in one hit instead. In less than an hour, I had to rush to the loo, so would just like to mention this as a warning to anyone who does not want/need a bowel detox. On the positive front, it frightened the UTI away!

1 tablespoon!!? I’d love to know the science, if any, behind that.

Snazzy, I like to give him the benefit of the doubt and think his advice was just a slip-up and that he really meant 1 teaspoonful. I mean, a consultant wouldn't get it that wrong, would he?!!! I might have thought it was me having a senior moment except that he wrote it down!! Very strange person - a few comments he passed left a lot to be desired.

Maybe it changes acid to alkili, or other way round.......just a thought...

Yes, Longtimer, the idea is to change the acid state into an alkaline one in the hope of making the environment less inviting for the UTI bacteria. It did help on that occasion but I didn’t bargain for the effect on my bowel as well! Bit reluctant to try it again - depends how desperate I am at the time, I guess.

I meant the high concentration and safety of that

This I was told about 30 years ago, and yes it works......

Alas....too late. I tried a spoon in a tiny bit of water and.... I suffered!

Oh dear, Pogo - sorry the warning was too late for you. Perhaps we need to take more water with it next time! :-)

I also read that research a few days ago.

For anyone trying it - it may be worth getting the bi-carb with aluminium. I was entrigued that it 'stimulated' gastric juices - would help for digestion of food then too.

Thanks for the update. I think I will try it over the course of the day in lots of water. Maybe 1/2 before each meal???

I wonder what the negative effects could be.

A friend of mine that has Lyme disease was told by a German naturopath to take a small teaspoon every morning 1/2 before breakfast.
