Parker’s Training Manual Reworked

Estellemac profile image
38 Replies

As Parker is slowly returning to his natural form devolving gradually back in to Yorkshire Man, I have decided to use the Parker training modules for the Doctor.

I will have to rewrite most of the material but the principle is still the same.

Set aims and objectives that will promote inclusivity and open opportunities up for all involved.

If I consider the Medics I have to engage with as young, mailable eager to learn individuals I can try to build the relationships between us and improve on my physical and mental condition. It will also widen their horizons. I know Doctors and Consultants are not Gods or Omnipotent beings but there are just a few who are slow to recognise that. I also realise they cannot know everything. I consider this my mission to assist in their plight by building a good rapport and knowledge base for working with people who need a different approach to wellbeing when living with a condition such as PMR.

Listening will be the first module after the Induction to their Continuous Professional Development in the Community.

I am unemployed now and need a new hobby as Parker is becoming more independent. He still has the cooking and cleaning plus it’s spring and the garden is needing sorted. His Skyrats are having new babies ready for Racing Season whilst providing a good source of protein for the Hawks and their babies. So he’s quite busy and hasn’t the time for me torment him as much with me and my Grumpy Old Troll antics.

I shall update you all after my appointment tomorrow to introduce my new candidate to the programme.

That's a bit difficult then - they've developed them before they ever got to medical school...

Yes I do. He often goes around singing “it’s hard to be humble when you are perfect in every way” There is no hope! 🥂

Just read a book in which was embedded a joke about a young university student researching humility. His professor said, oh yes, I've written the best book on the subject.

Well all men think they are perfect don’t they!

It’s only us ladies who live with them know the truth😇

I had a paddy last night - himself was washing up. There wasn't a soap bubble to be seen in the water so I know there will have been grease left on the oven dishes - I'd already nearly dropped them before dinner because of the film on the outside, inside was OK. He got SOOOOOO defensive "I'll do it my way or you can do it..."

Thank goodness for the dishwasher at home...

Estellemac profile image
Estellemac in reply to PMRpro

Do you think they do that so we take over? One of my tactics is to be sarcastic. It's ok if we don't buy real butter we can get more washing up liquid you don't have to be so sparse with it then? He likes butter.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Estellemac

I think so too!

The killer here was we get a dispenser bottle of Fairy (maybe, its effect is more goblin...) and a scourer pad when we arrive and have to pay 1 euro for them - so what's left is recycled by the resort. Or should that be "resold", doubling their profit???? It is still cheaper than going to the shop and fetching a bottle+ pad. Last time it was 50 cents which I felt was a rather explosive rate of inflation. But there are more important liquids to pack in the hold luggage...

Estellemac in reply to PMRpro

We are off on long haul September. Self catering for most is the plan. Parker has politely requested I don’t pack my self catering pack of Fairy, Scrubbers, sharp knife(never is one) etc etc. He thinks pants are more important and a clean Tshirts. I will need a session on packing. I can’t spend money on stuff the resort recycles it’s against all I hold dear!!!

I did bring a proper teatowel (the ones here are towelling, yuk) and an apron - saves on washing. Plus "my" usual vinegar for salads and non-bio for OH's stockings. But you are right - I should have slipped an old sharp serrated knife in the case. I can manage with the one here - OH can't get the "use the tip" trick for slicing tomatoes. They end up more sort of mashed...

Where are you going?

Estellemac you have inspired me.

I too am in for sensitive negotiations later today with my French GP.

I have completed my in depth preparation (on the forum) and I am ready to lay my cards on the table (bone scan, Xrays, blood tests). I expect cordial dialogue leading to in depth discussion.

A satisfactory outcome would be a transition period where I am free to explore an agreement with other parties (my Rheumy).

A breakdown in talks is unlikely as we have a long standing and amicable relationship ( and he is already well trained-- just a few head on one side - quizical - "pardon" 's work very well), So I do not anticipate the need for a divorce settlement in the forseeable future.

Help! Is this what the future brings?

Hi Fren

Your relationship seems solid with the GP and the preparation pre consultation is to be commended. I would like to see a cordial discussion take place but time restraints may not facilitate this? If this occurs do not let it present as a set back as you will have ample time (that GPs do not) to revisit the conversation. I will adopt the head titling quizzical pardon technique to enable my student to repeat the said words to embed a good understanding. Good tip there. Assertive but not condescending. Hope you get the outcome you need and all goes smoothly.

Sorry Estellmac,

I was being a bit tongue in cheek as here in France the Health System is totally different and I was imagining ( with many Brexit cliches ) having to retrain him after next March.

Yes I have a wonderful GP, I have been with him for over 12 years and he cared for my husband until he died in 2015.

Main differences here:-

You choose your GP / consultant / laboratory / physiotherapist etc and you stay with them but are free to change if not satisfied. You can choose to see the locum or wait if your Doc is sick or on holiday. If I need to be seen urgently I can be fitted in today. Appointments last 15mins, but you can book a double.(30mins) I do not see anyone else unless I choose to.

You pay at the end of the consultation and receive at least 60% back from the state within max 5 days and the rest is covered by insurance. The State supplies complementary insurance for those on low incomes. Being a paying client makes for a much more equal relationship.

All tests are reported to you and include a copy of the letter to your doctor. This is almost always immediately after the test before you leave, hence bonescan 2pm last Thurs, on way home with results, Xrays and radiologist's report at 3pm.

Results of a blood test taken up to 11am will be sent to me by Email at about 4pm, unless they are specialist and need to be sent away.

I am responsible for keeping my own medical info, which is also computerised. No lost notes, test results or Xrays.

All services eg. hospitals, speciality clinics, Xray and scanning facilities are private enterprises except for the big university research centres, GP's, Nurses, physios etc are self employed, hence they would starve if their service was substandard.

The quality of care and speed of service is stunning. Services, examinations, tests etc are prescribed (literally with a prescription and a letter). The patient rings for their own appointment or uses the online booking services. You will be penalised financially if you do not turn up without good reason. (very very rare).

So there you have it, European Healthcare, and yes we still have the odd 'thinks he's a god' practicioner, but I don't think he will last very long.

My daughter-in-law is French. The NHS does her head in. I think I will move in with her Mum for the summer. They live in Marseille.

I think I complain because I have nowt else to focus on. Its also part of my nature to whinge when all doesn’t go my way. I had to wait a year for my hip replacement and slowly sunk into a malaise about everything medical and loss of a past life. Shortages in the system and the extra damage done by having to wait so long. Doctors did do much more a few years ago so it’s hard to accept you have to do most of it yourself now. Self referral to Physio, insisting on getting a consultant, asking for X-ray or MRI or blood tests. Being pedantic I am going to get the works. I have a six month plan to get fitter and feel better mentally.

Went to France in December for a road trip with my sister. Love it just don’t speak it. My daughter in law is training me!!

You lucky people! . Met a couple at GP surgery who'd been living in France until last year, and you confirm what they said. . And here we are, leaving the EU . . . .

fren profile image
fren in reply to BonnyQuine

Yes BonnyQuine - Britain has benefitted a lot from it's neighbours.

Unfortunately the UK has never really comitted to being European and probably Europe will be better off without. I am sad because we have so much to learn from each other, a fabulous range of different cultures, history and ideas.

I love living here and won't be back, but I will be wishing all Brits the very best when the split happens.

I think my GP has already read your training manual!

How lucky I feel - he texted me on Good Friday morning with my blood results - CRP and ESR up - grrrr! I emailed back to say as it was the Easter weekend, I was adding in 2.5mg and was that OK? He emailed this morning to say "that would seem sensible" and "keep me posted" and had I heard about my rheumy's appointment (it was cancelled because she was off sick).

I worked in the NHS and have had plenty of experience of the other type of doctor, but am so grateful to have one who cares. (He's an NHS GP at my local medical centre.)

Me: PMR 22 months, 1 flare at 12 months and now another! Back up to 8mg from 5.5mg.

Estellemac profile image
Estellemac in reply to Rugger

Hi Rugger

Good news on the GP front. Very person centred. I want him to myself!!! But that would be cruel and unusual as you deserve some niceness in your life. I am in the throws of a flare up and my GP ruined everything today by listening to me and agreeing an action plan we both thought was best??? Must have done research last night I bet and knew what was come. So positive outcome around. No casualties and a new recruit for my training programme.

Estellemac, I think you must be telepathic and have sent him the first module by thought transference. Keep up the good work!

HI Rugged

Sorry to hear about your flare what a total pain. I am seeing my GP tomorrow to get blood results and to discuss coming off AA and discuss tapering. All ideas picked up at the Ilkley meeting. Hope my GP is as amenable as yours!
