How to get assistance at an airport

sennetta profile image
16 Replies

I have seen airport assistance mentioned many times but never noticed if anyone has said how to go about getting it......so...

Can someone please tell me to whom I make the approach - airline - airport or someone else?

How I make the contact - email? phone?

How much notice do I need to give?

How I sort it out for the return journey.

Info is needed relating to a flight from Liverpool to Barcelona this coming Tuesday at mid- day-ish so will the Easter Bank Holiday impact on my ability to arrange this at such a late stage, do you happen to know?

Thanks in anticipation.

If you google your question you will see the provision different airlines make. For instance if you are flying with British Airways you can click on their page and find out how to organise it. It is no harder than accessing this site.

By far the simplest way we found was asking the travel agent to deal with it! But the airline website should have details too. You book it via them but the service is provided by the airport.

I have used assistance several times and always booked it at the same time as booking my ticket - online, that is - where you are asked well down the page if you require it. I imagine it will be fairly simple to add it on to the ticket you have already booked by going to the "manage my booking" page. If you have booked by phone just ring them again. The Bank Holiday shouldn't make any difference but I'd advise you to do it as soon as you can. The return leg is covered at the same time, but always check!

As others have said several ways -

Get travel agent to do it - if time

Contact airline- see their web site -special assistance content - or phone - quote airline reference say what you need - I get wheelchair to airline steps or ramp - if you help up the steps then say so.

If very short notice then you can contact airport direct- 24hrs preferred but they will do it on day.

If you quote airline reference it covers outward and return trip.

Once you get to airport report to special assistance desk.

Good luck and enjoy

To all who have replied to my query. ...it isn't actually for me - I have my little grand children staying with us at the moment and the 3 year old managed to fall off the settee and break her collarbone last night - my son and his wife have gone away for a long weekend on their own over Easter. I spent most of last night in A&E with the little one. The family live in Barcelona and I thought they would benefit from having some assistance as the little one is in far too much pain to be carried - they will have another, smaller toddler with them aswell plus all the luggage - if it can be arranged. I was hoping to sort it for them before they get back here on Monday prior to flying on Tuesday. However beyond their flight departure details, I have no information to back up such a request.

Have a happy Easter all.

Ahh!

As Jane says, the airport will do what they can...they’re probably used to dealing with accidents etc like yours. Just ask!

What a nightmare sennetta. I am so sorry for the little one and the family. I am sure that the airport will pull out all the stops.

Hi Sennetta, when you book your ticket, you can ask for assistence, or by phone to the airline any time before you travel. Hope that this helps you.

Thanks everyone - think I've sorted this, but I suppose I will only find out if it actually happens!

Sorry a bit late in my reply. I see you will have flown by now so hope it went well.

I phoned up Jet 2 and Ryanair (the airlines we had booked through, we hadn’t used a travel agent) a few days before we travelled, when I decided to borrow a wheelchair because I could hardly walk from PMR pain) and it was wonderful. I just went to the special assistance desk at the airport and was told where and when to go and the rest was smooth sailing (or should I say flying rather!). I return in just over a few weeks.

Thanks Bridget. Flight hasn't happened yet, but have managed to book the assistance for Tuesday at Liverpool and Barcelona. Am reassured to see that Ryanair have done well by you.

Hope you are enjoying your trip

Ask your booking agent or the airline. I flew to Australia last year with a broken foot, in a boot and with crutches. The assistance was great and I was waited on hand and foot. All done through the booking agent. Good luck 😀
