Legs swelling.

Been on preds for over a year,down to 5mg, no problems before ,but for the last 3 days my legs are swelling quiet a lot. Could someone advise please.

Hi Merribell11,

If you cannot think of any activity that might have triggered this reaction, I would definitely see a doctor. The only time I have noticed swelling was in intense heat and after gruelling travel.

I have been taking painkillers and amitriptyline every day for my backache.

And a couple of this week gone, I have visiting friends and have had a couple or three glasses of wine, I wonder if with everything I’ve been putting too much strain on my kidneys.

If it was me, I'd get it checked out. If it's nothing, OK. If it's something, better to tend to it sooner than later.

Hello, any new swelling of legs should be checked out because it can indicate various things, some of which need treatment. I’d say if a couple of glasses of wine upset your kidneys that much, they ought to be checked as well. Anyway a doc should have a well versed set of things to check when you present to them. Yes I’ get swollen legs , it’s water retention and overweight and especially in the heat, ive been told to put my legs up and when I do it improves. I hope it will be helpful to get them checked out as the others have advised.

it could be water retention or a blood cloth. do you feel any tightness in your leg while walking? i would get it checked out asap... in my case it was both.

Have you had all the usual subjects checked by your doctor? What sort of backache? What painkillers?

It was something that happened to me after a severe flare some years ago when atrial fibrillation was identified as well. The tablets for BP etc did nothing - but a session of manual lymph drainage, just on one leg, sorted it completely in a few days! Never worked out exactly what it had been - but hasn't happened to the same degree since.

I have so many things go wrong that it is hard to pinpoint the exact cause of each new development . I was blaming my fluid buildup on kidneys also. It appears that it was more my heart. Two ventricles were leaking and when my beta blocker was increased the water retention was curtailed, it was also discovered that my veins were leaking also. Of course....you should check with your doctor. When I confronted my doctor about not telling me what was going on. She basically admitted she did not really know. Very comforting.....not.

Thanks again everyone but there’s a possibility that I it might be something to do with my big blunder, 🤔I had been given amlodinpine 5mcg for my blood pressure, but a week or two ago she decided to put it up to 10mcg, so I used up my 5s by two .Then I started to use my 10s by two ,for a few days I didn’t realise my mistake, checked up side effects and swelling of the ankles and extreme tiredness which I also had. So lying low for a few days,as tiredness gone and swelling going down slowly. Always so careful with meds ,but what a blunder,staying off them for a few days now.😁

It is also a common side effect of amlodipine.
