Pain in ribs

I had a very bad cold and chesty cough three weeks ago. The cold has gone and the chesty cough but I have been left with an irritating thickly cough. My ribs started hurting when the cough was bad, but they are now so painful, sharp pains when I breath in and a constant ache. Could the pain be PMR or something else?

It could be pleurisy my husband had similar symptoms and it turned out to be that - very painful.

The other thought I had was that the coughing has strained your muscles.

Everything hits us harder with an autoimmune disease but my guess is that your pain is not PMR as such but is not helped by it.

Sounds more like the result of the cough to me. I suppose costochondritis is a possibility. But it would be a good idea to run it past your GP just in case.

Dear JeanJean16

I have GCA-It sounds like you have fractured a rib. I know I fractured a rib during a heavy cough. My osteoporosis started very early in my life because I had undiagnosed Klinefelters Syndrome. With your breathing, sneezing hurting as well a trip to the GP wouldn't be a bad idea and a Dexa Scan to check up on your spine and hips.

How old are you sorry to pry might you have Osteoporosis? Do you have PMR or GCA? I had seven rib fractures all together the most inconsequential things would cause a fracture, pulling a fishing rod apart, moving furniture when I worked. Luckily I was treated with Testosterone Replacement Therapy for the Klinefelters and that started to strengthened my bones. If it is a fracture you can only grin and bear it whilst you recover and take it easy. Get plenty of rest

I hope you feel better soon

Regards

Colin

Thanks Colin,I am 69 and I do have the start of osteoporosis , I have had one hip replacement last year . I have always been proud of the fact that I have never broken a bone, perhaps this is the first one. I will visit my G.P.
