Pred dose when travelling

I have PMR and possible GCA - no biopsy because I'd already been on Pred For two months when GCA was suspected. Have been on Pred since beginning of May and now been on 35mg Pred for a month but, as I'm due to fly next week to America to stay with friends for two weeks, I definitely have no intention of reducing, rather I'm wondering whether I would be wise to go up to 40mg for a couple of days before and after travel. I've already learnt here how I need to deal with the time change for taking the Pred, just need to know if I should also do a temporary increase. many thanks.

I take transatlantic flights a few times a year and am travelling to the US this weekend. I always increase the day before, day of and day after travel...but only by 1mg. I find that teeny lift just helps take the edge off the aches of travelling and the time zone difference. I do the same on the way back. It works well for me.

Happy travels.

Thank you - this is my first ever trip to America so, although with the excitement there’s a lot of trepidation!!

You will be fine... usual flight advice goes double for us creaky folk ;) Drink plenty of fluids and move around or do gentle seated exercises... they do help... drinking loads helps because what goes in gotta come out again and it makes you get up and move. LOL

Have you organised assistance at the other end? Some airports have a very long walk from the gate and there are long lines at immigration and then a walk or train ride to baggage reclaim and another walk out to the main area. After a long haul flight I am so stiff and sore it'd take me a week to make the trek so I always book it. Its a free service and its way better at that end then on the return to the UK. You do need to prebook assistance with your airline before hand (usually 48 hours min I think) and there will be someone to help you at the other end... whether that is a wheelchair push all the way or a seat on a ride-along cart. Its better to book it and not need it than to need it and not have it available.

I love the comments about making sure I drink plenty of fluids - I expect I'll be doing a lot of getting up and moving 😀

And yes, I've booked assistance at each airport - I needed it recently when I flew from Gatwick and was very grateful for the help. Actually, I really enjoyed the ride on the "buggy" 😉😉

I travel extensively to the US and they are always really helpful. Hope you have a wonderful time wherever you may be.

I'm off to Munich tomorrow, to meet up with friends who are currently on a European tour - their home is in Florida. I will spend a couple of days in Munich with them and then fly with them to Florida, where I will stay for just over two weeks. SO excited - never been to any part of America before!!

Good advice from everyone. I go lots, off next week but cruising there and flying back. You will love it, their can do attitude is so refreshing.

Make sure you take some spare Prednisone, I always make sure I have extras in case I need to increase or worse if my drugs get lost. Ask your GP he/she won't mind.

Have a great time

I always take extras in case I ever drop one on a hotel carpet... five second rule definitely does not (ever) apply to hotel carpets LOL

Good thinking. I am always dropping mine as I take them in the dark.

Thank you for the advice. I asked for extra Pred-- because of my holiday - when I renewed my prescription so I have enough for a month. Not taking any chances!!!!
