Post Op Looking Forward

I have finally got my new hip but now feel I am having a flare up? Only got home from hospital Wednesday (operation was Maonday 18th). I think it's a flare up or am I just paranoid and its normal post option fatigue. Shoulders and neck aches like before diagnosis of PMR but what effect would increasing steroids have on healing and infection? Why is it so hard can't I just gave one thing!!! I also think I am just needy and whinging. I am not calling the surgery yet as they are not too empathic with PMR and the surgeon did say it's not his subject specialism. Probably just the drugs and adverse reaction to anaesthetic wearing off.

Anyone out there got any previous experience post operation or comments. Any constructive feedback much appreciate.

You don't say what dose of pred you are on - that is an important point please.

You have had surgery that requires a lot of hauling at your body while they are inserting the prosthesis and you were lying on a theatre table for some time - they are not the most comfortable of things! You are also using walking aids of some sort I imagine? Using crutches gave me awful shoulder pain, despite adequate pred. I'd think that has a lot to do with it - but it could also be a flare in response to the surgery.

Hi PMRpro

I am down to 5mg and was managing ok. The shoulder pain I think is due to crutches. Been on those 6mths now. It's the Physio I have to do. Not much but repetitive and getting on and off the bed. I've got no strength in my arms or legs. I just can't lay still to sleep either to rejuvenate. Your reply puts things into perspective and I should take it slowly and stop over thinking things. If it is a flare up I will know by Monday. The op bits are getting less painful and my mobility is improving. Thanks for taking the time to respond and lend an ear.

I can't say if this is PMR or not but it is quite normal for feel tired and achey. Under anaesthetic you are a dead weight and although care is taken to keep limbs and bits together you will have been moved about. You may have also been in the same position for quite some time. Add to that the effect of Pred making your muscles more prone to being strained, I'd expect even being on your side with the top shoulder over for longer than you'd like would do it.

Hi SnazzyD

Your right I was hoping for the miracle no pain cure when I got home. Might have been a bit too much much to expect 🤗

Did you or have you been given a course of anti-biotics post surgery?

And as PMRpror says, we really need to know, what dose of pred are you on..............

Estellemac profile image
Estellemac in reply to jinasc

Yep had anti biotics but anaesthetic messes with my bladder function causing cystitis symptoms. Asked 2 doctors and a nurse to double check it wasn't that. All said the same. No problems detected. Feel better talked no to my PMR buddies now.

It might be worth finding out if you had a temporary catheter put in. Might be the cause of the cystitis. Just a thought.

I grovelled for a catheter they are so against it. After 5 attempts they gave me a scan and said oooohhh it is full and not just the sensation to. It just lasted till today but has eased and will go by weekend. Just something I could do without. More annoying is no one else suffered. How cruel is that thought?

You might like to take, Yeo Valley Organic Pro-biotic Yoghurt, whenever you have an anti-biotic, they knock out the good guys as well as the bad, that yoghurt contains L.Acidopolous some of the good guys.

I also took VSL#3 but that is not cheap. I had an op and it caused a massive UTI and other problems, I made little or no progress till I happened to see a different Consultant. I was not expecting to see someone new, but the other one was on holiday. Serendipity.

I like yoghurt ant fruit so I will send Parker to the shop for some. Thanks. Benefit getting a different consultant you need to keep him now.

No thank you, I had GCA and have been in remission for nearly 6 years.

However I had an op 2 nearly two years ago, it went slightly wrong - so it was a bit of a struggle.

I hope I never have to see a Consultant again for any medical reason.

I paid my money into the NHS and never wanted it back, I have had it back in spades since I was 68. In fact, I owe the NHS millions.

If you can add a teaspoonful of Manuka Honey (highest UMF you can afford) to that Yoghurt MH is a natural anti-biotic and I take a teaspoonful everyday with my yoghurt and my 88 year old cousin takes it in her porridge.

I have heard that a hip replacement can quite easily trigger a flare and it is not that unusual.

Estellemac in reply to piglette

I thought that but non of the medics mentioned it.

What else don't they tell us!!!

I will need a hip replacement and my GP told me to expect a flare due to surgery

Estellemac profile image
Estellemac in reply to jevuki

I should have really. I asked for a consultant Rheumatologist but he declined saying the PMR is manageable and if the Surgeon has any problems he will speak to him. I am ok now and reducing back slowly. It did remind me of life at the start of this illness. I hope all goes well for the op I am getting better each day. Thought I had forgotten how to walk!! Once the swelling went down flexibility came back. Just not got to go mad with enthusiasm.

No experience to add to the responses...just a great big virtual hug, and good energy coming your way!!! 💐🎈😘

Take kind and gentle care of yourself, as you would a dear friend who had just come through the same experience.

Warm regards, Jerri

I would give it a little more time! I had my second hip replacement five weeks ago and it's been a lot more difficult coping with the recovery this time around (I didn't have PMR at the time if the first hip replacement). The man-handling during surgery definitely affected one shoulder/arm in particular - it took two days to be able to move it even slightly! - and it has been a lot harder getting mobile again because of trouble using crutches, stairs etc etc. It's only in the last week or so that I'm seeing proper improvements. I had to reduce my Prednisolone quite quickly down to 10mg for the surgeon to agree to operate, and two weeks after surgery I decided to increase back up to 15mg to help with the shoulder/arm pain, as I was on less pain relief than prior to surgery, and really struggling with the arms/shoulders. Hip was fine,.lol! I'm now starting to taper back down from the 15mg because I need both shoulders replacing (AVN) in the not-too-distant future and my shoulder surgeon wants me no higher than 8mg........

Sorry for the ramble! 😂 To sum up: give it more time.......good luck!

Thanks for the ramble. I enjoyed reading your experience it makes me see how you got on and strategies for working with this affliction. Also reinforces the patience element. Thing that gets me is if one more person in (locally not on this forum) tells me how quick xxxx recovered and was scaling mountains again) I might not practice verbal restraint. Ahhhh!! My rant over. Thanks for your input.

My pleasure! 😊 You will get there - so will I! - in our own sweet time. Some things just cannot be rushed and although it can be very frustrating I've found that I get less fed up if I accept that I just have to wait for the time to pass......

Impatient lady! Took me a week just to get over the anaesthesia last time I had some work done in my knee. Not to mention the sore throat and filling being knocked out by the intubation. Then there was the hauling me around so all the aches and pains get magnified. Joint surgery is akin to carpentry I understand!

Now might be a good time to try the cbd oil, I am still getting good results, especially with the fatigue. I also take a cranberry supplement every day as all juice seems to be full of sugar. This helps as the steroids irritate my urinary system. Tena is my friend :)

Hope you feel better soon. In the meantime I hope Parker is looking after you well xxx

Parker is on top of his game so much so I am running out of hidey holes round the house. He's off for 2 weeks from his hobby job to look after me. So 24/7 contact and health checks. I am so lucky yet nagging!!! Just the meds and poor me syndrome. Once I am off Morphine I will be back fighting towards sensibility revue all my drugs and look at alternatives. As for joint surgery I thought they were building a conservatory the other side of the curtain. They only do a spinal anaesthetic wild mild sedation. Still had a highly sensitive reaction to it though. But much safer apparently. Regard Tena I have shares in their company. Doing too much fruit sugar I have to look at. Even if with yoghurt I eat 3 portions a day. Thanks for your support. Just got to take it slooooooow!!
