Munchies

Had just had to up pred due to flare up and the dreaded munchies are back. From early morning til 6pm I am good and stick to sensible foods . However AFTER I eat my sensible evening meal I start craving food- and end up doubling my daily calories in a couple of hours. I sort of understand the blood sugar thing but why in the evenings after a meal do I feel so hungry all the time? If I took pred at night would the munchies come in the morning when I might be able to find other things to take my mind off hunger?

Any ideas / tips welcome as I am trying to lose some of my steroid weight! Thanks.

What was in your evening meal?

Today was chicken , wild rice, mushrooms low carb sauce , kale and peas. But it's the same every night whether I eat a big roast meal with potatoes or a protein based salad!

I'd add a bit more fat - that is what makes food satisfying. Carbs never help in that respect. And have you been drinking enough during the day?

I think I know the feeling you mean - maybe having your main meal at lunchtime would help?

How sensible-my fog brain didn't even think of that. Will try tomorrow. Anything to stop eating between 6 and midnight!!

Also -I read a really interesting article in June 17's New Scientist called The Fire Inside by Caroline Williams. Wondered what you thought about it but not savvy enough to upload here.

Thanks for your's and other's wisdom on this site. It saves my sanity sometimes!

Even if you were - I can't read it without subscribing to NS!

Try and find something to do - when you are hungry have a drink and go for a short walk, often by the time you get back you have forgotten!

Hi,

As PMRpro implies maybe your evening meal needs to be more fulfilling.

Keep a cucumber, wrapped in foil, in the fridge, when the 'munchies' strike, cut one inch off and eat...........loads of water and many minerals. Very few calories...................

Yes, what is it about the evening meal? That is the one time my body wants to keep eating. For what it's worth, my Pred is 6pm and it is enteric coated, I eat at 8pm and I don't get the Pred sweats, tinnitus and zonked feeling until 10pm which I assume is when it is starting to go into my system. I no longer wake at 6am with low blood sugar since my dose got down to 22.5mg and below.

Hi Jude,

Just to say since doubling mine to 15mg ,evening is fatal even after tea !

I am munching also but what I am doing is naughty, I have bowl frosties and cup tea at 9.30pm, seems to fill that hole !!

More than anything else, good luck

Hi Jude. If you find the answer to your munchies problem please do share for I have the same problem!!!!!!!!

Perhaps the answer may be to take up knitting so that the hand that feeds us is otherwise purposefully occupied?????? 😏😏😏😏😏
