What was the antibiotic you took which gave you such a bad result? Surely the pharmacist should have noted any known contraindications.
The antibiotics that can cause tendonitis are the Quinolones such as Ciprofloxacin. I got severe problems for two years from taking it for 7 days every three weeks for six months when I had chemo. It was my dog's vet who diagnosed the problem having seen it in dogs. My GP had never heard of it even though it says it in the drug info. My sister got it after two months and wasn't told either but had me to warn her by then. It says it is rare and I don't think has any connection with Pred.

Thank you for your reply Heron . I was taking mino and doxycline ( not together) for months and one finger tendon went but my doctor see connection. Took 2 Cipro and one amoxicillion and woke feeling terrible. Had two more tendons gone on fingers and more feel bad. Could I ask do you have any suggestions fro help as my gp not interested ? Feel like I'm waiting for the next thing to happen. Also it's left me terrified of needing antibiotics.Thsnks so much for your reply thought I was going crazy.
Sue
Do you know if mino is a Quinne?
What is Mino?
So far I have only been able to find Flouroquinolones (Quinolones) associated with this. The other antibiotics you mentioned are not in this group, only Ciprofloxacin.
There is an an extra warning in the above link of risk with this and tendonitis if you are over 60 and/or are taking Corticosteroids! The following from the US is just one of many links that come up and suggests it disrupts the blood flow and impedes collagen formation.

Have you tried printing out the warnings and giving them to your doctor? The first link source I gave you should be one that your GP has ready all the time on their computer. It is not new information either; my troubles were 12 years ago.
Hello Heron
Minocycyne is the full name. Got the antibiotics when on holiday had a urine infection. Did your tendons heal in time as this is worrying me so much. Really appreciate you replying to me.
Thank you
It will have been the Cipro - and you must never take it or any of the quinolone group again, whether you are on steroids or not.
It happened to me - except I got the most common manifestation, achilles tendonitis. I spent 9 months on crutches as a result. The GP and the pharmacy both knew I was on Medrol - and I made the mistake of not checking myself or I would never have taken it. The orthopods in the local A&E ( I had to go to get myself crutches late on a Friday evening so I could move at all) recognised it immediately - and it seemed to me they had seen it often enough.
Cipro and its friends have a LOT of people complaining about the side effects - I think there were even class actions. Anyway - google ciprofloxacin legal issues to get a lot of links about that. And the ciprofloxacine FDA black box warning.
I wonder if a GP would dismiss the FDA opinion?
Thank you so much for your reply PMR Pro. I have had 3 fingers donehillies by GP they had gone completely and things still don't feel ok. My Achilles doesn't feel as it used to either but I can walk.Should I be taking any treatment? May I ask did you or was it just a case of time. I read your posts everyday so trust your opinion. This has been a nightmare.
Thank you
Ps Is Minoocyline a quenoline? I'm am now terrified of antibiotics.
Minocycline is a tetracycline - it should be OK. Not making any promises mind!
For me it was time, just waiting for the inflammation and swelling to calm down, in the meantime making sure I did nothing to risk the achilles snapping which would have meant major surgery. I had an ankle support to reduce the risk of falling and turning my ankle - hence also the crutches to reduce full weight bearing.

This does not really relate to the discussion, but I wanted to pass it on.
After an op I had a problem after 3 months on anti-biotics. Finally I saw a new consultant as mine was away. He was Italian and he told me that after taking any anti-biotic (all of which knock out the good bacteria as well as the bad guys) to take an organic pro-biotic yoghurt immediately after ending the course of. I did and still do. The one I found was made by Yeo Valley, it does not have a long life - you can understand why.
At that time I really needed more than that and he told me that he could not prescribe this one and it was expensive, VSL#3. I went to my Pharmacist and she had never heard of it......made enquiries and then told me the price. I gulped and went for it................second best money I ever spent (1st best money was Bowen Therapy) One week later the difference was fantastic.
Thank you will have a look.Appreciate your reply.

My ear/nose/throat doc prescribed Cipro. My pharmacist said not to take it. I'm over 60 and using prednisone. The doc switched me to doxycycline. No problems there.
SusanEleven, what a great pharmacist to catch it!
I have enough stuff wrong with me that they know me by name when I walk in
This young pharmacist said Cipro was overkill for a sinus infection. I was actually moved to tears that someone was watching out for me!
"Fluoroquinolones are associated with an increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture. This risk is further increased in those over age 60, in kidney, heart, and lung transplant recipients, and with use of concomitant steroid therapy."
This is from the original 2008 US Food and Drug Administration info.
Wow! So glad I read all the responses! I have NOT had to use antibiotics since starting prednisone in Dec. 2016, but I usually have a bout of bronchitis during allergy season and have been on Cipro for it!!! Cipro never gave me a problem before - but other antibiotics have caused a myriad of other problems for me! I made notes and I appreciate everyone's input!!
