Doctors and Doctors...

In this month's edition of Scope, the magazine for the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine, there is a historical article about the man who founded the society that preceded the IPEM. After his death his family found the following poem in his papers. Remember, he was a doctor himself!

Doctors and Doctors

One little doctor, looks you thro' and thro',

Can't diagnose your case, and then there are two.

two little doctors, failing to agree,

Call a consultation. Then there are three.

Three little doctors, poke you o'er and o'er,

Send for a specialist. Then there are four.

Four little doctors, wonder you're alive,

Order in the x-ray man, then there are five.

Five little doctors, trying funny tricks,

Another brings the stomach pump - and then there are six.

Six little doctors, preparing you for heaven,

In comes a DD, then there are seven.

Seven little doctors, decide to operate -

Call in a surgeon, then there are eight.

Eight little doctors, think it is your spine,

Send for a neurologist, then there are nine.

Nine little doctors, all of them are men,

Send for a lady doctor - then there are ten.

Ten little doctors, standing by your bed,

Come to a decision, find that you are dead.

Excellent, well done.

Just goes to show how important it is to have the support of PMRGCA.uk and all its friends. Keep involved, increase your understanding, search out others and their experiences. Only then can you hope to get the best out of the team of Doctors who genuinely want to help.

Just brilliant. how many, I wonder relate to this??

All the doctors I've met have been knowledgeable, professional and run off their feet. Certainly no time to hang around in groups of ten!

I think you'll find groups of 10 at daily/weekly meetings for discussing patient management. Our local hospital achieves that most days on the medical wards...

Fernan profile image
Fernan• in reply toPMRpro

And I doubt whether they've been hanging around helplessly in disagreement until the patient dies.

I'm sorry if this offends your sense of humour - after all, it was a practising doctor who wrote it...

If this forum were generally more supportive of the medical profession and it's practices then maybe it would seem less disrespectful to laugh at it

What is it you would like us to support?

Fernan profile image
Fernan• in reply topolkadotcom

I would like to see more consistently positive comments about the professional knowledge and commitment of our doctors. I would also like to see more support for the concensus of medical opinion regarding alternative therapies and unusual diets.

So would we all! But we can only have what is there....

If the 4 or 5 leading members of this forum decided that the unwell and sometimes vulnerable people reading their posts needed to have confidence in their doctors and the treatments they were getting then the ethos of this site would quickly change. As it is, last time I looked, 25 people said they liked a disrespectful poem about little doctors who didn't know what they were doing.

I’m delighted so many have a sense of humour

Can you expand on your comment about alternative therapies and unusual diets?

HeronNS profile image
HeronNS• in reply toFernan

People on forums like this are usually here for a reason, one of which may well be perceived if not actual mishandling of their condition by the medical profession. I personally am happy with my GP in so far as she diagnosed me accurately, and she allows me to manage PMR at my own pace.

I encountered a rheumatologist recently who was so patronising towards me and so puffed up with her own importance (she's the only osteoporosis specialist around here) that I could hardly bear to speak with her, and got absolutely no satisfactory answers to any of my carefully prepared questions.

I'm sure doctors are secure enough in themselves to appreciate a bit of humour!

Fernan profile image
Fernan• in reply toHeronNS

But why would that make it appropriate to laugh at them?

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador• in reply toFernan

I repeat - it was written by a DOCTOR, A DOCTOR was laughing at his profession. A lot of them do you know.

Fernan profile image
Fernan• in reply toPMRpro

It was not posted by a doctor. In any case, whoever posted it, it was not at all respectful to a group of people to whom I for one am very grateful

HeronNS profile image
HeronNS• in reply toFernan

It was taken from a PUBLICATION - something in the PUBLIC domain, a journal for doctors, no less.

Fernan profile image
Fernan• in reply toHeronNS

If you say that this site is partly for people who are dissatisfied with their doctors then that is a completely different context to a professional publication which is presumably generally supportive of them.

I surrender and retreat. We are all entitled to our opinions. As the daughter of two doctors and stepdaughter of a nurse, I found nothing offensive in this poem and I know my parents, were they still on this planet, would have appreciated it. Peace.

Oh dear. You are wonderful Heron. All we do is relate our experiences. Good and bad. We must be allowed to speak our truth. Sadly there are some shocking doctors. Xxxxx

HeronNS• in reply toDaisychain12

It's a pretty old post. I'd forgotten all about it. It's a funny poem!

Daisychain12 profile image
Daisychain12• in reply toPMRpro

I repeat: we merely relate what has happened to us.

Daisychain12 profile image
Daisychain12• in reply toFernan

People are writing about their experiences. Things that happened to them. How is this disrespectful? If bad practice occurs it is hardly the fault of this group.

Loved it! And I bet a lot of doctors would. I love this forum. It has certainly helped my knowledge of PMR and anxiety much more than my gps have had time or interest for. What a shame some people are so touchy they miss the point.
