Yoghurt

Good morning

Please can I have information on the taking of pred and yoghurt.

What type of yoghurt I need to buy, and how I then take it with the pred. Sorry to sound idiotic, but need to know as I'm not at all clear about it.

Best wishes

Hi Deeroy.

Different people have different views - as always! I don't necessarily have it every day, but when I do I usually go for Greek or Greek style full fat (for the calcium) and have with fruit or granola or muesli for breakfast. Or even add it to fruit to make a smoothie. Others go for probiotic to help gut because Pred can upset stomach. I sometimes have probiotic drink on cereal for a change - can't take milk in the mornings for some reason - not Pred related.

Some take a spoonful if they take their Pred in the early hours.

Like most things it's trial and error really - don't think there's any hard and fast rules.

Will get back to you re our other discussions soon.

Live yoghourt is best, take it first thing in the morning to line your stomach then take Pred.

Yoghourt is good - a live one - any time of day and full fat is preferable as the low fat options are crammed full of sugar to give them some flavour.

As the others have said - what you like. No point eating something you don't enjoy. But NOT low fat/zero fat and preferably not flavoured ones with loads of sugar and gumpf in them to make them taste better or make them thicker. If you don't particularly like the taste of yoghurt then the Greek varieties are far creamier and a slightly different consistency. Organic ones often have better cultures - and many have added probiotic cultures that are said to be good for your stomach. If you can get it, kefir is a similar product that some people like better. Different cultures are used to make it so it tastes a bit different.

Most people just eat some yoghurt with their breakfast and take their tablets. You can use it instead of milk on cereal or just eat a few spoonfuls from a big tub. Others who take their tablets very early in the morning or during the night have a couple of spoonfuls to cushion their tablets. Drink yogs are good for that but tend to have an awful lot of sugar in them.

Deeroy, I'm a big yoghurt fan and have been for years. During my steroid days, when my stomach reacted badly to a couple of different PPIs (Omeprazole and Lansoprazole) I decided instead to increase my intake of yoghurt to a small carton every morning on either muesli or porridge, to line my stomach before taking the steroids. My favourite is Yeo Valley organic fat-free and sugar free (apart from the naturally occurring sugar). Adding a teaspoonful of Manuka honey makes for a very tasty and healthy breakfast! And nobody is "idiotic" on this site! Happy eating!

I make natural yoghurt and add fruit - usually banana. I never buy the commercially available so-called 'fruit' yoghurts which have more sugar than fruit. I have it with an oat-based cereal.
