There's lots of information about taking Pred with yoghurt in place of Lansoprazole but no mention of how much to take - one spoonful, 250g tub or more?
Has anyone taking yoghurt and not one of the prazoles had any stomach problems?

I take mine with my toast in the morning and have had no stomach problems so far
I've always taken mine straight after a breakfast that's included a couple of tablespoons of natural yogurt on some fruit. So far I've not required omeprazole or similar.
I gather from what others have said before on here, that you only need a few good tablespoons or small bowl of yogurt if that's all you're eating before taking prednisolone.
I use apple sauce. I eat a few spoonfuls, then take my prednisone with another spoonful, and then eat one final spoonful. I think I eat about half a cup. No problems at all since I started doing that.
I took a small bowl of Greek yoghurt with a little bit of honey and had no problems for about 4 years, with my PMR diagnosis. When I began to have GI issues, I swopped to Entric coated Pred. I was diagnosed with GCA/LVV and obviously went on high dose Pred. I was prescribed Actemra/ Tocilizumab and began to experience low abdominal pain that had been mild and intermittent previously and became constant. After many tests I was diagnosed with Diverticular Disease and a small hiatus hernia ( a contraindication for Actemra). I now take 20 mgs of Lansoprazole and Buscopan. I struggle with pain and diarrhoea a lot of the time and have to be careful with my diet. It is my belief that over an 8 year period the cumulative effect of harsh medicines has damaged my lower intestine, IBS has been mooted too. This is a tough one because the “ prazoles” as you call them have side effects too. I don’t know if I could have avoided this by taking a PPI from the start. We all have susceptibilities, so I can’t really advise and I think Actemra was the final straw. Whatever you do, never take your Pred on an empty stomach.
I personally take a small spoon full a couple first, swallow pred and repeat with a couple of spoons. Never had any issues.
Just to add for the ‘other side’, nothing helped me, not even a full meal. Tried a different type of anti acid but it only lasted a few weeks. Ended up on enteric coated Pred with a bit of Gaviscon at bedtime.
I have a cholesterol yogurt with my pred then 2 tablespoons of Greek yogurt with fruit. I stopped taking provokes after 2 years because they upset my stomach. Now 4 years after starting I am almost off the Pred, fingers crossed!
Please, could you tell me what is a cholesterol yoghurt? This is not something I am familiar with.
I am referring to the small yogurt drinks that have plant sterols in them to reduce your cholesterol, they are supposed to reduce your cholesterol by 10%. They are available in most supermarkets, the own brands are cheaper. I find they are a good way to take my pred tablet with and hopefully help reduce my cholesterol. I also have Greek yogurt every day. I think that pred causes stomach problems is used long term, that's why prozole is prescribed a lot. I found that all the prozoles caused me to have more problems so stopped them and used yogurt to line my stomach.
I have a small pot of natural yoghurt or 3 large dessert spoons from a big pot. It’s about 100g. I used to take pred after a bowl of porridge but yogurt is easier to manage earlier in the morning and it’s happy to sit on the bedside table overnight. I have a second (oats) breakfast when up and about.
I cannot eat in the morning. I take it with Kefir (thin yoghurt). I drink it with the pred. Maybe a little less than ½ a cup. Same in the evening before bed.
I’m prescribed Lansoprazole … but love Alpro Greek Style yogurt and I’m fine with just that.. rather not take it really!
Fingers crossed, I am finally off the pred now after 3 years. I used to take one heaped dessert spoon of natural, live yoghurt with the pill on top of it and swallow the whole lot down, after my bowl of porridge and fruits. I never took the Omeprazole (to the raised eyebrows of any doctors) and never suffered with any stomach problems. Good luck!
Quick question, please? Sorry if it seems I’m taking over the post. When people get down to 1 - 3mg, do you still take pred with food. I take my pred between 2-3am, but gave up food with it at about 3mg. (I truly dislike yoghurt, all of it, sadly, I used to eat cheese, like Piglette does!) But at 2am I don’t really fancy any food!
Unlikely many will see this here - post as a new thread if you want replies.
Can you just have a drink of milk -or it’s that not your bag -better than nothing at all.
You know, I never thought of milk, because I don’t drink any!! I don’t drink tea or coffee, either. But I don’t dislike milk, & will do that from tonight, sorry to ask such a basic question. I didn’t stop with any thought, it just kind of happened, & this post reminded me that I should do! Thanks! S x
A pharmacist used to say a glass of milk was plenty. No doubt full fat would be best ...
OK, thanks. We not have semi-skilled, as my Mum called semi skimmed one day…& it stuck! Better than nothing, will order some full fat! Thanks for help, S xx
At least it is semiskimmed - has some fat! Which is part of the benefit though the bugs do have an important role
I think it's about natural 'live' yoghurt carrying the good, protective 'friendly' bacteria* , or whatever the right word is - which are not in milk - *and probiotics, whatever they are!
I clearly need to take a look at the info again to get the right words! - I'm afraid I've become complacent because it's all working well.
I use apple sauce when I wake at 5 am (few spoonfuls, then take another spoonful with prednisone, then another spoonful). I am at 4.5 mg. I don't eat breakfast until 7 am.
I did not want to take a prazole so didn’t for six years. Just took my prednisone with any food. Then I started getting indigestion with my evening meal. So reluctantly took omeprazole for one month and then stopped. Indigestion comes back every now and then and I just take omeprazole for a day or two and am fine again for a month or tw o. Don’t know why but it works for me. I still take the pred with food.
I’ve even o pred over 6 years and take with a dessert spoon of yoghourt. I eat the yoghourt then take the pred. I’ve had absolutely no stomach issues. Sometimes I buy a pack of 4 Rachel’s yoghourt pots; they’re small and one tub does two mornings. Good luck.
I used to take each Pred. tablet with a dessertspoonful of organic yoghurt. No stomach problems
Depends how much pred. On 40 to 15 I used nearly a full 110gm pot of yogurt, taking the pills after a couple of spoonfuls and each dipped into a spoonful, then a couple of spoonfuls more. As I decreased, it was about half a pot, and now I am on 2.25, a third of a pot.
This is in the middle of an oat muesli or toast breakfast. I used to think it would be better not to drink with the meal to dilute the yogurt, but haven't noticed any difference.
I haven't had any problems since doing the yogurt trick, but as I recently reported, on a couple of weekends away, just with muesli, I got pred acid reflux.
For 3 1/2 years I ate a container of Greek yogurt (4 ounces) for breakfast and then took the prednisone. I have a super sensitive stomach and never once did I have a problem. Even today, now that I’m off prednisone, I continue to take any meds after eating yogurt.
Now 6 years into PMR I take my pred with half a cheese stick. I keep the cheese in my freezer until I go to bed. It may get a bit sweaty by morning, but is still edible and enough to avoid any gastric problems so far.!
3-4 heaped teaspoons of thick plain yoghurt with Pred at 4am then back to sleep. Since august 2020 ; no problems. I went fairly smoothly down to single digit doses, however, and now on 3.5mg. Not sure if dosage makes a difference.
