Dandelion tea is used in herbal medicine all over mainland Europe instead of "water tablets". It is said to have a lot of other effects including being antiinflammatory. It's French common name - pissenlit - means "pee the bed" so obviously traditionally it has the reputation! Whether it really works or not is another question. Nettle tea is also claimed to be diuretic. In fact, both dandelion and nettle are claimed by some to be almost miracle herbs - which leaves me maybe a bit sceptical!

Just remember though that just because it is "natural" or "herbal" doesn't necessarily mean it is safe to use alongside prescription drugs - it is still introducing substances that could interact with them. Your pharmacist may be able to tell you more.

You can also eat young dandelion leaves as a salad and all parts of the plant can be used in other recipes. Here where I live in Italy it is grown in market gardens and used as a vegetable or as a sauce for pasta. Nettles make wonderful soup and a delicious flavouring for dumplings and cheeses.
