Hi, what is anyones experience taking antidepressants while going through pelvic syndrome. Helpful?
Antidepressants: Hi, what is anyones... - Pelvic Pain Suppo...
Antidepressants
I have Interstitial Cystitis & for that I take 25mg Amitriptyline at night. It helps with the pain.
Lyrica and neurotin helped, however they caused extreme tinnitus, too the point of it almost being deafening.
More traditional antidepressants helped, but triggered severe migraines.
Try them out. Everyone is different and what does not work for someone might end up working for someone else.
Cymbalta helped me cope for a long time, but then I started having intense nightmares and had to discontinue. I've been reading that nortriptyline and amitryptiline can help. I am going to talk with my doctor this week about trying one of those
Hi I've been down that road a few times, and one thing ive learned at my expense ,is every medication you try just give it a month,if it does no good stop it,don't keep thinking a bit longer,or you end up like me struggling to stop. But I think there's no harm in trying them, you have nothing to loose.
I agree totally. N
Hi. I just started on an antidepressant 2 weeks ago. Was told it would help with my chronic pelvic floor pain. Sounded good to me. WRONG! It has been a disaster. Constipated all the time. Distended abdomen as well. I want to stop the antidepressant before coming off it will just cause more side effects and nasty withdrawal symptoms. Drs not tell you all the negatives. It may help for some people so I’m not saying don’t try antidepressants, just be aware of what you are putting in your body and how it may effect you. Best Wishes. N
I had intolerable reactions to Cyclobenzeprene, Gabapentin, Lyrica and Cymbalta. I became agitated, I gained weight, I became totally brain fogged and eventually I lost my sense of smell and taste!
I have taken 20mg. Nortriptyline in the morning and at 3 p.m. for several years now as a nerve pain modulator. I take 30mg. at night; my neuropathy makes lying down painful to. I have only gained a little weight taking it and I have had no bad side effects.
I think it is only normal that one may become depressed when dealing with disabling injuries and diseases. In my case, I have supplemented with Passion flower, lemon balm, magnesium and GABA at bedtime. These have helped to keep me calmer. I did not get depressed....I got mad because no doctor would believe me or help me!
Hi,Considering you know it's Pelvic floor problems, would you not be better seeing a Physiotherapist. Just a thought.
No physiotherapy for me. The pinched nerves are still too highly agitated and vulnerable to injury.
I have had seven pelvic surgeries now and likely scar tissue has developed. ( My Naturopath gave me ‘Wobezyn’ a supplement to offset scar tissue forming after my latest two laparoscopies ) I have also had two Myer’s cocktail IV’s at my Naturopath’s office. They are custom made to help heal my nerves with the addition of B vitamins, amino acids, vitamin C etc. This treatment has the nutrients bypassing the gut and directly reaching the blood stream.
The first physiotherapist I saw in 2008 when my nerve compression injury became acute and chronic did internal rectal and vaginal adjustments. She made my pain extremely worsen. She was trying to manipulate an 18 year old C-section scar! She damaged cauda equina nerves as well. I am not going anywhere near a physiotherapist for at least a year or more.
My body was left inflamed for years! I developed severe high blood pressure and I was not monitored nor given medication for it. My blood sugar was elevated until a Naturopath educated me on using a chromium supplement. It has normalized.
My body needs rest and time to recover. I believe the nerve branches that were pinched for over 3.5 years are permanently damaged because they were compressed for way too many years. No physiotherapy will help the nerve branches heal. I need time to heal.
I was talking to airplane, when I said PT.
So sorry....I am pooped and I got confused!
No problem, pain gets us all like that at times.
It is not pelvic floor in my case.....it is the rear sacrum and where the inferior rectal nerve runs in my ischial spine.
Hi Gemini71. Thanks for the great advise. I saw a PT today and she and the chiropractor are going to work together. He will take care of the disc problem and she will do the muscles and scar tissue from my 2 c sections. Between the 3 of us , I hope there is resolve. I hope you are doing well. N
Oh that's great news,I hope everything goes well for you.
Hi. I started experiencing tinnitus around the same time that my pelvic floor symptoms started. I asked the dr about it and he said it was just old age. I don’t think so, seeing I’m not that old. I think there is a pressure change in your body when other areas are not working correctly. I’m not a dr but it makes sense to me. N
Hi. I take amitripytline 50mg, which helps a lot, especially with sleep. As others have said, different people have different reactions so we can't assume that what is good or bad for one will be the same for us. Best of luck.

I’m so happy that the 50mg of Amitripytline is working for you. I was told it was an old antidepressant that they are bringing back for the use of chronic pain.
I tried it. Started at 25mg then went to 50mg right away. It didn’t help with the pain at all. It just made me feel like I was under a fog. I did however sleep better at night. Still woke up with severe pain and no ambition to do anything.
You are correct. What works for one may not work for the next one.
I hope it continues to give you relief.
All the best. N
hi i take gabapentin with cymbalta and it really helps with prayer...anticipating being off all of it ....try some PIYO stretches as wel..we hold our bottoms tight the stretching really helps.
