Should fibroids be treated if suffering with symptoms

Hi everyone,

Back in March 2014 I was told that I had a small fibroid which was only 1cm big. I was told that it was nothing to worry about and to carry on.

I had previously had endometriosis when I was 17 and was treated by menopause therapy. This has made me concerned about anything to do with my reproductive organs.

January 2015 I had a surprise baby girl and the doctors told me that they thought that the fibroid hadn’t gone and that it obviously likes my body and to again not worry about it.

Since then my periods have gone back to how they were when I was young. Extremely heavy (I have to take iron tablets), large clots the size of ping pong balls, pain bordering labour pains that puts me out of action for a good few days and my tummy swells and is rock hard like I am full term again.

The doctors keep saying that it’s only a small fibroid and not to worry but it’s affecting my life and my daughters.

I have asked if the fibroids grow and shrink throughout cycles and all I get told is “it’s only 1cm” and that’s by every doctor at the practice.

Should fibroids be treated regardless of size if symptoms are experienced?? What are your views?

Thank you xx

Hi I myself have a few small fibroids I was told the only treatment would be a hystorectami but that I was too young. So they only treat my symptoms not cure it the gp suggested the pill but it really didn't help tried a lot from pill to coil without good results. The gp has me on 2 types of acid to steam the flow of periods which i take during the time of month but it's hit and miss some months it works a treat the next not at all but regardless always end up taking a combo of ibuprofen and co-codamol for pain and sometimes in the month when spotting. Know what you mean about iron it's exhausting by the time it's replaced it that time again sigh I hope your gp can help ease your periods the pill works for some but might have to run packs together hope this helps and you get the help you need
