Did you ever get the results? If so, What kind of treatment are you getting? What kind of Symptoms do you have, if any? Do youtake ursodiol?

Good luck to you tomorrow. I was nervous too. I had a fibroscan that said stage 2-3 and then an MRE that said something different (Stage 0-1). Although I'll have another MRE in January to monitor for any changes, I have decided not to dwell on it since the treatment is not really any different regardless of stage, plus it's something I can't control. I go by how I feel...which is good at the moment, but I definitely understand wanting to know. best wishes💕😊

Hi Elliweim,

It is always good to know what stage your PBC is an Fibroscan is an important tool for this as blood tests don't correlate with disease stage.

Be aware that a Fibroscan is very good at detecting whether you have fibrosis (Stage 3) or early stage disease (Stage 1/2). It is less accurate to determine whether or not you have fibrosis or cirrhosis (Stage 4). This has been proven in multiple studies.

If there's a question, you can talk with your doctor about a test called Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE, done with an MRI machine). Biopsies are no longer typically used for staging unless there is another liver disease (AIH, NAFLD/NASH) is suspected.

Good luck and I hope you're showing early stage disease (still)?

Take care,

Cathy

Fibroscan and biopsy seems to give different results, my liver biopsy showed stage 2/3 and Fibroscan showed 5.4 stage 0/1

At a PBC meeting recently in the Chicago area, the Dr. speaking said that fibroscans and biopsies are not necessary once PBC has been diagnosed. Taking the correct dosage of Urso and watching your liver enzymes with blood tests every 6 months is important.

Biopsies are notoriously unreliable because they only sample one small part of the liver. I would treat that as telling you that there is fibrosis but that it may not be widespread. What does your doctor say?

I think that is correct. Some on us or our doctors like to follow the progression of our PBC but truly the treatment does not change.
