Been reading on here about the liver and bile as in when it is made recently. Thought it would be of interest to read this extract from netdoctor.co.uk
"Bile is the thick, greenish fluid, secreted continuously by the liver cells at the rate of up to one litre per day. It is stored and concentrated in the gall bladder and plays an important role in our digestive system in breaking down dietary fat.
Within the liver, the bile passes along tubes or ducts to the gall bladder.
When food, especially fat, leaves the stomach, the gall bladder is stimulated to contract and bile passes along the common bile duct to the first part of the small bowel (duodenum) along with secretions from the pancreas.
In primary biliary cirrhosis, there is a reduction in the number of bile ducts, leading to interference with bile flow."
and since i (and many of us pbc'ers) had the gallbladder Removed, it is awful (personally speaking) -
Hello everyone who replied.
I actually thought the article would be of interest but didn't think about how it would be for PBCers out there who had had their gallbladders out as I've not had mine removed nor any problems from it.
So I read a bit up about it and thought I'd add this to fill you in a bit further (as new to me too as I know a retired lady who had hers removed a few yrs ago). This is taken from the nhs.uk website:-
"Most people can continue to eat a healthy well-balanced diet after they have their gallbladder removed. However, if you get side effects, such as mild diarrhoea, it may help if you:
eat more high fibre foods
avoid any foods that make your diarrhoea worse
What does the gallbladder do?
The gallbladder is a pouch underneath your liver. It stores bile, a fluid made by the liver that helps to break down fatty foods. When you eat food, the gallbladder releases bile into your duodenum (the top part of your small intestine).
If you’ve had your gallbladder removed, your liver will continue to produce enough bile to digest your food. Instead of being stored in the gallbladder, the bile drips continuously from your liver into your intestine."
I think reading this info, I personally deduce that regardless of PBC with or without a gallbladder, we are still going to have the same symptons due to the bile ducts under attack in PBC.
I had my gall bladder out Dec 2011, i did ask the question if it would be worse for my PBC and was told that it would not make any difference. I also have cysts on my pancreas that are there to stay!!
i had my gallbladder removed 7 years ago, and was diagnosed with PBC 4 years ago, i have dry eyes, dry mouth sometimes usually at night, and queit often get really bad acid in the night mostly, when it is really bad with the pain i am sick, lately have brought up a very orange coloured bile, is this normal?
