fibrosis
Simply, this means the formation of scar tissue. Our body tries to repair and return injured tissue to its normal structure. When this isn't possible, scar tissue forms in an attempt to maintain the integrity of the tissue.
In the liver, when any degree of injury is done, the liver tries to return to normal size and structure.
Sometimes the rate of injury is greater than the liver's ability to repair itself.
When chronic build up occurs, the body continues to form scar tissue. When this build up is excessive, then the state of cirrhosis begins.
