It is an autoimmune response where your body is attacking the microscopic biliary tubes within your liver obstructing bile flow and causing inflammation. Left untreated, it will harm your liver and eventually destroy it.
However, in general it is a slow progressing condition. It can not be cured but it can be managed. First line of defense is urso. Majority of pbc patients are responsive to urso so they take it long term. There are also other meds to address like ocavalia or fibrates if needed.
