I have the PBC antibody but had no symptoms. Then I was given hydroxychloroquine for palendronic Arthritis. After a week I felt ill. Dr did bloods and my LFT’s were totally deranged. Was in hospital for a week. Now taking URSO and Colestramine and now 8 weeks later LFTs slowly coming back down but not normal yet. Anybody else had an experience like this ?
Acute Hepatitis: I have the PBC antibody but... - PBC Foundation
Acute Hepatitis
Sorry to hear that you are suffering I can’t help other than suggest maybe give the foundation a call or your GP. Hope you feel better soon. Good news is your levels are falling. Some drugs I know can send them sky high. Take care give your body time to calm back down. Keep safe
To be diagnosed with PBC, the tests done by your liver medics should have registered both the presence of the PBC antibody AMA (antimitochondrial antibodies), 'and' your lfts (liver function tests (lfts) should also have been abnormal for those chemicals which are typically high for PBC.
[NB just having the AMAs is not enough for a diagnosis of PBC, there need to be high levels of the relevant lfts as well - unless an electron microscopic scan of the liver has shown liver damage typical of PBC]). PBC is not diagnosed by AMAs and/or 'symptoms' alone.
If your lft tests were okay before your arthritis medication, it's possible that the medication caused a temporary fluctuation in your lft levels. How many tests have they done, and over what period of time? I'm surprised they rushed to give you the medication, if you had not been fully diagnosed with PBC before, and not taking the meds before.
