Is the Ketogenic Diet, w intermittent fasting okay, if I have PBC?

I'm 65, newly diagnosed w PBC a year ago. After 6 years of extreme fatigue, it was great to finally put a name to it. Once I started Ursidol, my experience with explosive diarrhea finally stopped. Due to the lack of exercise, along with major depression, I've put on close to 100 lbs. I'm ready to begin walking and swimming, and also want to start the Keto diet, along with intermittent fasting....Does anyone know if this should be okay, with my having PBC? Thanks, Sandi

Hi bluefireeyes welcome to the group. Over the last couple of years I have slowly lost about 20kilos which is over 40 lbs. I decided to go for the long process which alters my eating habits for the future. I have a much more vegetarian diet, rarely have red meat but I do eat chicken and fish. I never have any fizzy drinks such as cola or lemonade. I cannot say how good or bad the keto diet is for those of us with PBC as I have not tried it however if you use the search box in the top right hand side of this page and type in keto diet you will find previous threads on the subject of food and diet. Ghosthunter posted about 6months ago and there were many answers so hopefully if you have a browse you will find some answers.

best wishes

Thanks for responding. Being new on this site, I thought I had run a search, yet got nothing. I'll try again.

Hi bluefireeyes,

I personally have not tried the Keto diet to comment on it. I think a balance diet of complex carbs, lean proteins an healthy fats is deffinitely the way to go. About 10 years ago I did the body for life challenge and completely changed how I view food and overall diet. I think you can still buy the Body for Life book on Amazon. Basically you eat 5-6 small meals (200-300 calories)a day. The ratio of each meal should be about 40% carbs, 40% protein and 20% fat. They key is adding exercise at least 4x a week. High intensity interval training as well as strength training. I hope you find a diet that works for you and makes you happy but most of all, healthy🙂

Hello. I have friends on the Keto diet. Initially they felt like garbage. Almost felt like they had the flu for a week. It is a high fat diet. They do not have PBC or AIH. Just wanted to lose weight. They can't eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. I have gone the no processed food, no bread, no salt no sugar route on my own and lost 45 lbs. in a year. I have leveled off in weight loss but have dropped 2 more sizes as I added strength training with light weights to my routine. Walking has been great for me as I have asthma and bad knees for aerobics etc. Check with your doctor before you give Keto a try. One of my friends has developed high cholesterol on it but feels the benefit of losing weight is worth it.
