I think it is based on weight dont think age matters but not 100% sure

I’ve read same thing, based on weight.

It should be by weight but my gastro doctor was thinking of reducing mine but I moved to the country and new gastro doctor is keeping me on same dose. I am 74.

Why not talk to the advisors / people at the 'PBC Foundation' who host this site on the general health blog forum 'Health Unlocked'.

If you link to the 'PBC Foundation' logo at the top of this page, you will access the links for the website, with contact details for the 'PBC F', so you can then phone their trained advisors, or email. The website also has loads of info, and if you join the 'PBC F' (it's free) you get access to even more info.

They are a UK group, set up over 10 years ago when the founder, Colleen, was diagnosed with PBC and no one seemed to know much about it. Now the 'PBC F' are at the forefront of charity work and help for PBC sufferers, and their site is renowned for its close links with the leading PBC specialists/consultants in the UK, who are at the forefront of treatment and research, and often write on the website and in the tri-yearly magazine 'Bear facts'. Even though I try to keep up-to-date, I always learn something new on the site.

However, from what I know, I agree with the 3 answers, above: that dosage is based on weight, and age doesn't make a difference. However, it's definitely worth checking with the PBC Foundation, as if your Doctor is wrong in suggesting that your dose should be lowered because of age, he/she might also be unaware of some other issues, so it might worth checking if your dose is currently absolutely as it should be.

I always say that PBC is one of those rare and complex conditions where we need to be our own best experts.

Hope this helps, take care,

Gritty.

I also think it's based on weight and not age. I'm 75 and my consultant, whom I have every confidence in, has never suggested it should be based on age.

My dosage has stayed the same since diagnosis 5 years ago. I'm almost 79 and just had a really good report back from my Gastro. Alk.Phos has come down after last blood tests so it looks like Urso is doing the job.

That’s great news! So you see a gastro also? I see one too.

Sorry not to reply sooner, just picked my EMail up. Yes I've always had a Gastro since diagnosis 5 years ago. I think I've had PBC much, much longer as had several symptoms which were unexplained. I've never visited my GP much and tend to ignore things if possible. Looking back I think I should have gone much sooner than I did, but I'm now on URSO like most on here and seem to be doing Allright. It must be a lot more stressful if you're a lot younger especially if you have a young family to think about. Are you happy with your Gastro and are you keeping well? All good wishes to you.

Hello! It’s ok. Yes I’m happy with my GI. He’s good & knowledgable as far as I can tell. I do a lot of research so I am not in the dark. There are really no good hepatologists in my city. My GI is part of the liver clinic at one of our major hospitals. He works closely with hepatologists at 2 major hospitals in Dallas, Baylor Medical & Southwestern Medical. If I should ever get in trouble with my liver, I would go to a hepatologist at one of the two. So I feel well tended to. I’m happy to hear you are doing well. Is Urso keeping your levels down?

Yes Urso seems to be working for me at the moment, hopefully that will continue. My Alk.Phos was up for a while but has improved. I must admit I don't keep a close eye on numbers, I live in the UK and am about 40 miles from the nearest Liver clinic so just attend the local Hospital. I try to eat healthy, do some exercise and take my Urso. I'm glad to hear that you're being well looked after.

I am 79 I have been on the same dose for years

This is wrong. The Urso dose is always based only on your weight...... never symptoms, lab results, or age. I am 73 and take it everyday for the last 35+ years. Please make sure you taking the right dose. I would have to question how much your doctor knows about PBC. Urso dosage is 13-15mg/kg of body weight...... good for you for at least questioning it!
