Hi all.

I was just wondering if anyone takes Melatonin for sleep.

I asked my Dr. and of course he never gives me an answer.

Would be happy for any input and thanking you in advance !

I take once in a while.. some says it suppresses autoimmune disease and some says it upraises. I have read it is not recommended for rheumatoid arthritis. So it is better for you to consult with your dr.. hope it helps🤓

I never took it myself. But, I have several friends and family members that take it. They say the effect is mild, and only assists in falling asleep. It's not a real sedative. One of my friends takes it for 1-2 months, when she experiences a bad sleeping spell. I haven't heard of any ill effects of melatonin from the people I know. Sounds like safe to try.

Hi, when you see your consultant ask him/her. I take half a sleeping tablet and have done for many years and I am allowed to ...the only problem is that as liver is damaged..I am stage 4 it iincreases the effects,,so now going to take a quarter, having no sleep was awful so I need sleep to enjoy my life now, this isnt probably relevant to you as hopefully you are not at stage 4 which is cirrhosis.i hope you get it sorted out and if GP is not able to answer..and remember they are not geared only to one complaint, you can always leave a message for your consultant.

Thank you Bobbycat

My Dr does not know enough about PBC to answer my questions. So I'm in the process of trying to find another.

It's just so hard to function with no sleep under my belt.

Melatonin is not a prescription pill but a natural vitamin type sleep aid.

I know we have to be careful even with vitamins.

I wish you well

LorraineLouise I was told many years ago that it is more harmful not to sleep than taking a sleeping pill with maybe some side effects, My itching is so bad that without that sleeping pill I will not sleep at all. Now at least for 6 to 7 hours I am relieved of itching, and if I do itch, I do not know of it. So for me I cannot go without sleeping pill

I take two 5mg chewable tablets every night. I sometimes itch at night. This puts me in a deep enough sleep that my body is realxed. I wake up well in the morning. I am not groggy at all. I take it between 10 and 10:30. I use the natures made brand.

I buy it for my 21 year old son and have since he was around 17 or so. I wanted to take it but it has a liver warning on it. When I asked one of my liver team members he said to take Benadryl instead.

I have a number of autoimmune diseases. Sleep is a rare commodity for me without help. I talk 15 mg of melatonin (chewable) best option along with a regular over the counter sleep tab. The melatonin will put me to sleep within 15 minutes, the sleep tab will keep me asleep. At least most of the time. If my pain levels are high, then it won't be a good night. But, generally I recommend the melatonin.

Yes I do. It has been recommended by a afew knwledgble colleagues. It is good for jet lag for ny age, but more useful for sleep for "seniors" whose natural melatonin production. Is reduced. ( a natural hormone). If you use it get SLOW RELEASE as it last 6 plus hours. However do check with your doctor...
