I don’t drink but have not been limited or restricted on anything in my diet. My hep said continue as I have been and enjoy life. He only said absolutely no raw seafood.

No raw seafood? I've not been told anything to restrict except alcohol. I've had lots of raw seafood! Now I'm a tad concerned!!

I’ve seen 2 hepatologists. They both said no raw seafood. Too high a risk for bacteria

I hold high regards for both drs. They are from Methodist Liver Institute in Dallas. The one I saw Friday does extensive research on PBC.

Thank you! Its always helpful to hear what other consultants are advising!

You’re welcome. As we’ve all seen, some of them have different views on it. But for me, I’ll stay in the safe zone. 😊

I lived in Galveston until May this year..... I would have a big concern about bacteria

Absolutely! I always loved oysters on the half shell. When I was pregnant with my son I was told then not to because of bacteria. That was 30 years ago and I’ve not eaten them since. Been so long I’m not sure I could still get one down, lol!

Mine also said no raw seafood

in reply toHelenAust

There's a high risk of infection with raw seafood. I don't think you need worry about what raw fish you ate in the past for 2 reasons.

1. you can't change the past so no point worrying

2. if you weren't ill when you ate it, it didn't harm you.

You can avoid it now. I was told not to eat it. I was told same after chemotherapy for same reason, immunity is low. It is disappointing to us who loved that food.

I too was told no raw seafood and only a very occasional drink ...but no other dietary restrictions

Pamela4475 - someone once posted a brilliantly simple breakdown of what percentage of carbs/fat/protein is optimal for healthy eating with PBC. Lowering carbs is helpful.

Is it under healthy eating with pbc?

in reply toPamela4475

I'll try to find it. It will prob be tomorrow now. I can find it tho, if the poster herself doesn't chime in, because I replied to her at the time in appreciation of it. So I can find it that way.... :-)

Ty so much 😊

It's definitely on this site hosted by PBC Foundation. I still haven't found it though. Can anyone help?

Has anyone found it?

in reply toJlruggie

Jruggie - found it! I am feeling so much better for having more protein than I'd believed was right amount.

Pamela4475 - Better late than never! I'm so excited, after a month to have found what i was looking for. deborafrog replied this ages ago to odieweb. "Eat 30-35 kcal and 1-1.2 g of protein for every kilogram of your body weight". Deborahfrog's hepatologist gave her this advice. I hope it helps. I love how simple it is!

Thank you!!!

Pamela4475 - just checking that you have seen from my reply to Sun65's Q that the proportions of carb/protein are for a day...not a meal. Sorry i forgot to mention that but I'm sure you worked it out.

Sun65 profile image
Sun65 in reply to

Hi Pam ... is this for each meal? Also is it safe to eat nuts and seeds?

in reply toSun65

Sun65 - per day! Good job you asked. I forgot to put that in my reply to Pamela4475 :-)

in reply toSun65

Sun65 - if you have no nut and seed allergies nuts and seeds are whole, wonderful foods. I have several different kinds of nuts in separate glass jars in the fridge (the fat in them can deteriorate or go rancid in the cupboard).

Thank you I have been eating nuts and was afraid I was hurting my liver. They have helped me with the itching and bone pain. Both are gone now. I also eat sunflower seeds. They have helped too.

I eat too many I know. I must try to resist cake, biscuits and chocolate. I’m a bit of a compulsive eater. I’m having my first fibroscan today, that might give me a kick up the backside.👍🏼

in reply to7443jec

7443jec - I hope it goes well. No more talk of kicking yourself up the backside! Life does that for us. It's our job to nurture and be kind to ourselves. Your introductory pic doesn't look like you are overeating.... :-) And cake is better than nothing after cancer until you are organised and feeling on an even keel.

I too have had this question and have never gotten a good answer. It’s like finding a pbc specialist, a pbc nutritionist or just a contractor to put a bathroom in my house. Wild goose chase.

Not what you're looking for?
