I have had pbc for 6 years with virtually no problems/symptoms. I have recently had a scan which shows I have a large amount of varices in my oesophagus. Does anyone else hve this and is it serious?

Hi Roseter
I have had PBC for many years and am still around and 70 today. I developed varices in my oesophagus about 4 years ago and these developed to the point where they were treated last year. This occurs during gastroscopy and I suggest you insist on sedation as I do. I have reguarl checks and am due for another in 2 months time as my gastro wants to check the development of another one at the gastro-oesophageal junction which was quite small when seen a few months ago. I have had no problems as a result of these. Medication such as beta blockers is sometimes used also but I was unable to tolerate these. Stay confident and good luck.
I was found to have a small one about a yr ago before I had my transplant but it never gave me any bother but I am sure doctors will tell you what signs to look out for if the varices are severe. In UK they usually carry out endoscopes yrly to check on the varices and treat them if need be. Try not to worry best of luck.
