Hello karenlesley.

Sorry to read that you have gained weight in under a year.

I suspect though that it isn't the urso but the amitriptyline. One of the side-effects is wanting to eat more and weight gain.

I don't know much about amitriptyline but it's not something I would want to take. Can I ask if you are taking it due to the itch in PBC. If not can't think why you are in PBC unless you have some other health condition.

Hi there I take amitriptyline to help as a painkiller as I have fibromyalgia and to help me sleep at night as I could not get any sleep at night not the pain but something I can't explain

Hello karenlesley.

That seems to be one thing with most medications, take for one thing but then have to put u with something else.

Know what it is like not being able to sleep at night, I have many a night where I find I can't and then I am itching so that just adds to it all.

I have been trying a few things over the last few months and I have been finding that most of the time it works. I quit having caffeine (tea usually - only have a coffee at morning and one before the evening meal), switched to red tea later day. I tend to cease eating after the evening meal so I go to bed around midnight not feeling like it's not so long since I last ate. I rise early at morning and tend to fit in a 17hr day. Can't say I ever sleep right through the night but I can wake and then return to sleep shortly after.

Have you thought at all recently to come off the amitriptyline and see how go? I seem to think this med is one you may have to wean yourself off? If not and it is one tablet prior to bed, have you tried just taking half the dosage first. You would prob be best speaking to the doctor who prescribed the tablets but I hope I have added some input that you may find useful to take with you.

Hi Karen gosh that is a very big weight gain I do not suffer from Fibromyalgia so can not imagine what that is like but I did used to be on Urso but dont recall putting on a lot of weight with it so as Peridot says it must be the Amitriptyline to blame. So if I were you I would ask your dr about an alternative to this for your pain. And look at your diet and if you do crave food a lot go for the healthy options such as fruit or raw veg and drink plenty of water and get some regime of exercise that does not cause you pain. All the best hope you get the weight under control. Bfn.

I would discuss with your doctor before coming off Amitriptyline as it is a drug that can help a lot with pain that doesn't respond to more tradition painkillers. It also effective for RLS and sleeping so you might have a lot to loose. URSO did make me put on weight but it levelled out after a year or so but it was about a stone not 4!

I have changed my diet radically to keep my weight stable over the last few years - is that something you could look at? Take care x
