I have just been diagnosed with cataracts and am scheduled to have an operation on 17th September. Could there be any link to PBC with this condition? Wondered if anybody out there has any experience of this.

Cataracts
I was told last year that I was starting with them. It surprised me as I am only 52 and thought they appeared later in life.
That our disease is so strange that we think everything can be her. I operated cataract with 47. I have green eyes and I think it helps more. I live in Brazil and is very little sun and ozone.

I read somewhere that if one lives long enough every human would eventually get cataracts. From what I remember reading, the cataracts come at different times of life depending on all sorts of factors. So some of us get them sooner than others but in the end everyone would at some time.
Hi, it's funny that you ask about cataracts, I have had PBC since 95 and have had to wear glasses. I am 65 and this past Feb. I had my left eye done then in March had the other eye done. I asked the doctor if PBC had anything to do with the cataracts. Nobody would answer me because they really don't know. But I can see so so much better now. Felt no pain so don't worry.
Hi Susanantovil,
I know your cataract post was an old one, but I'm considering having lens replacement, which is the same operation as cataract operation. I don't have cataracts but I am short sighted and now am also long sighted for near vision. I visited my opthalmologist before I was diagnosed and now have had a date for my operation in April. I can have multifocal lenses implanted which will enable me to see clearly for both near and far distances. Just being recently diagnosed with PBC I'm not sure whether the PBC will bear any relevance for my suitability for the operation. I've tried doing some research, but can't find anything. The only thing I have found is that fellow PBC sufferers have successfully had cataract operations - so hopefully it should be ok. Did you opthalmologist have any concerns about your PBC when you had your cataract operation? Also - how did it go and how are you getting on afterwards? I'm presuming you had artificial lenses implanted - any problems since?
Grateful to learn of your experiences.
many thanks
Hilary
Interestingly I have recently picked up this month's WDDTY (What Doctors Don't Tell You) magazine and in it are the essential vitamins and minerals and what they are thought to do and help avoid, cataracts were mentioned.
Chromium was the one. Apparently cataracts can be a sympton of deficiency. According to the article, the levels fall from the age of 40 of this mineral. It is reckoned it keeps the heart and arteries healthy. In the dietary source it is found in meats, wholegrains, bran, green beans and broccoli.
According to the medical profession certain vitamins and minerals can be poorly digested with PBC so it may or may not be a link. I like to think certain deficiencies are caused by one thing but then set off a chain reaction.
