is it safe to take vitamin b complex if i have pernicious anaemia
I am from the Thyroid UK side of things, visiting here, so not a PA expert. My take on this is:
You need your B vitamins regardless of PA.
You must be careful not to over-do it with some B vitamins, especially B6, but also B3 and, in some B8. Some people are more sensitive to excesses than others.
The amount of B12 in a B-complex is forgettably low if you have PA.
If you are taking an appropriate dose of B12 (in whatever form and dosage works for you) and are fully aware of your PA, then the possibility of folate masking of B12 deficiency is less likely to be an issue.
Some B-complexes seem to be formulated according to neat arithmetic quantities rather than a sensible balance. I'd be very careful about which one I'd choose.
Hi,
I was told by heamatologist to take a multy (B) vitamin you buy over the counter, as she said it is important to have all in a balance, which multy vitamins are. No problem if you have PA, and good to take as many (B) vitamins (and other essential minerals) need each other in metabolisme say.
Kind regards,
Marre.
The main reason for having shots for PA is that you lack the intrinsic factor which allows you to metabolise B12 in your gut. Therefore B12 supplements wont be utilised. Other B vits as mentioned above need to be monitored by your GP or health adviser.
