hello all,

I was wondering if the atrophic gastritis and PA are the same thing.

There are different types and causes of atrophic gastritis but those with pernicious anemia experience a condition called autoimmune atrophic gastritis, where antibodies develop against intrinsic factor and/or the parietal cells of the stomach. The parietal cells produce hydrochloric acid and intrinsic factor.

Pernicious Anemia is a kind of unfortunate name because it is quite common for B12 deficiency to exist without anemia, including in cases of autoimmune atrophic gastritis. And with the availability of B12 injections, it is no longer a pernicious (fatal) condition when treated.

But the name has been used for so long now, its somewhat hard to change, although I think some organizations have tried to do so.

hello Technoid,

yes I've been trying to read about them and was getting kind of confused if they were all the same things and they have different names. I have pernicious anemia and B12D and had my injection today . today is harder than my last day of injection more sore and tired and head buzzing a lot. but I know it's all part of the healing I'm trying to stay positive today. 2 1/2 months in treatment now. Just reading a lot of positive posts from everyone to stay up beat on the feelings today. thank you,

Rosina

To add to the confusion the term 'pernicious anaemia' is used to mean different things by different groups, and some use it to mean B12 deficiency with anaemia so confusion may just be because people are using the term to mean different things without formally defining what they are referring to. The definition used by Technoid above is the definition used by the PAS.

good morning Gambit62,

thank you. yes I'm still trying to learn about the PA and trying to read everyones post's on recovery and maintaining this. it's all new to me. I'm using methyl b12 Eod for 2 1/2 months, and the symptoms are changing then get better now in the later part of this month some are getting stronger and some have gone, so it scares me sometimes if the methyl is working and it raises questions in my mind but I'm sure and hopefull it's just the healing that changes at times before it gets better.
