Hi Astlebridge,

Welcome here. You really need to learn about this illness because it is totally bizarre. Become a member of the Pernicious Anaemia Society. Often the build up to diagnosis to it can be long and stressful.

pernicious-anaemia-society.org

You do not need to have an exact diagnosis, you can be involved in research and they are the only organisation that can produce statistics. Please know the misdiagnoses too :-

b12info.com/misdiagnosis/

Plus, buy or download Dr Joseph Chandy and Hugo Minney (PhD)’s book Vitamin B12 Deficiency in Practice.

b12d.org/book

GPs do not know about it because they have so many other diseases to learn. Plus the bureaucracy.

There are lots of myths and misconceptions about this disease/condition. Please get hard copies of your blood results. The cut-off for your area is 180 ng/l. This has been set by some very wise wizards.*

Please note the range and the cut-off levels for B12, ferritin, vitamin D and folate in your area. You do have another disease / illness to contend with. Hashimoto’s disease and PA/B12D go hand in hand. I noted that you have not posted ferritin but from previous post that you have listed your symptoms. IBS is only diagnosed from exclusion. So, after Coeliac blood test whilst eating gluten for 6 weeks, h.pylori stool test, endoscopy, colonoscopy and whatever else.

Is their Family History of PA / B12D or gut disorders ?

Please do not allow your B12 levels to be re-checked once treatment has commenced. It is futile. Keep a symptoms diary to monitor your own.

In the U.K., standard treatment is 6 loading doses are Every Other Day (EOD) for 2 weeks. Then we are moved onto injections Every 3 months. Most of self treat (SI) because we cannot survive on 3 monthly. We have heard from medics that we are addicts and it is toxic. All rubbish.

For you, you have to reach a level of 179 ng/L before they recognise that you are sickie bad. You will need a ferritin of above 55 ng/L because they all work in combination. That really is the magic bit. Thank you for popping your age on, as these contribute too.

As we age our stomach acid decreases so we may not cleave the essential nutrients that we need to regenerate ourselves (cells, nerves, bones, tissues). So, note your appetite, whether you feel full easily, have you gone off any foods, crave any foods, any heartburn, bloating and obviously, evacuation. Note size, shape, colour, consistency, odour, any discomfort in passing a motion or urgency.

Most of the community use apple cider vinegar with food or a little lime juice because of reducing stomach acid. I cannot and will not tell you what to do but I will give you choice. You may wish to ask for an Intrinsic Factor test from GP as well as Coeliac blood test whilst eating gluten for 6 weeks and a h.pylori stool test. Please do not be passed over by doctors with anything to do with your age or other medications such as statins, antidepressants or painkillers.

Wheat recently posted this from ALGORITHM from Gloucestershire CCG which dictates the recognition and treatment of an illness. It’s a very pretty white, yellow, green and blue flowchart that Euclid would be proud of.

Astlebridge, you are not a number to me. However, more information needs to be gathered to ascertain your individual Clinical Picture. Me, I much prefer to practice safely and err on the site of caution.

Hi,

Welcome to the forum.

I'm assuming this result was for serum B12?

Plasma vitamin b. 275ng/l. (180-650)

Although your serum B12 was within normal range, it wasn't that far up the range.

Blog post about being symptomatic for B12 deficiency with normal range serum B12.

I left detailed replies on thread below with info you might find useful.

I'm not a health professional just someone who suffered for years from unrecognised and untreated B12 deficiency.
