b12 deficiency and MRI scanner...

Hi everyone,

Weird question...

Did anyone else who has had an MRI, find that it upset your nerves for a while after? (Like weeks)

I cannot tell if it was that, or the heightened stress of awaiting my results...

So, thought I'd ask on here?

It was 2 weeks after my first one that my whole body crashed and b12 was in 200+ range (after taking some supplements)

I get anxious now about my second one (that one is to look at an old injury I had from an accident I had in my mid 20s)

After having a brain MRI, I was violently sick for a few hours and felt really shaky. But when I had one on my knee, I was fine after.

Sorry to hear this.

I am having one on brain and spine. Last time I felt more tingly after and felt worse than before I went in (no contrast)

Yes, I had a weird aftermath from an MRI scan, especially when I was falling asleep. It was like electricity shooting through my brain. It took several weeks to disappear.

MRI process (not contrast) can trigger mast cell degranulation, releasing a number of chemicals some of which are inflammatory. I only found this out after having a surprisingly odd and lengthy reaction, which took a few weeks to calm down. I wasn't aware that it particularly was a B12 lowering reaction for me, but the stress would have done to some extent, so it is interesting that you noticed that your serum had dropped. Certainly other stresses have had that effect on my serum. I get the same mast cell dysregulation with windy weather or pressure dropping, even with physical pressure to the body in a lesser way. I use quercetin, but you may find an antihistamine works - depending on what else you are dealing with and taking, of course. Might be worth mentioning/asking. Best wishes

Thank you!

Did you find that b12 therapy made it harder to handle the mast cell stuff?

And did you have any GI mast cell symptoms? I am finding that the majority of mine have lingered in my GI system and I am struggling to keep weight on.

After the MRI, my b12 was lower, I had full body symptoms.

That is not so easy for me to answer as I had body wide symptoms anyway, from the B12 deficiency, and mast cells and other (fibromyalgia etc). I do have GI symptoms from both although it is a few years since my weight was low - changed diet and added supplements to help with that. I have been treating my lifetime B12/folate issues myself for many years with oral supplements, the B12 of which is clearly no longer enough, so I have just changed to injections. It is too soon to know how much damage can be retrieved, or for how long the oral has been insufficient. Clearly you need the Bs to be working well for immune function, and for methylation which is one way that the body clears histamine and you also need B12 for DAO which is another route. So I am hoping that treating the B12 and other Bs might help rather than hinder. Best wishes

Definitely had a feeling of buzzing in my body during my last one (head and neck), and felt like pins and needles generally for hours after in the whole of my body. Bit disorientated too for a couple of days. Had no idea bout the mast cell degranulation that bookish has highlighted in their reply! Explains a lot.

I had an MRI brain scan after a slight stroke. They offered me a choice of music on headphones - that machine is loud - and I said ‘Country’.

But the only lasting effect from it has been a new aversion to Kenny Rogers….
