Hi I am diagnosed with MS Trigeminal Neuralgia and hughes syndrome I also had a stroke in the Pons 3 years ago I had a message from the GP this morning to say I have low B12 and need to have loading doses and they have made me an appointment with the nurse (absolutely no further information other than that!) Obviously I am not happy and have asked if someone could discuss it with me first I have multiple extensive spinal lesions (none in the brain) and painful Trigeminal Neuralgia I am worried that the B12 jabs may cause a relapse of my symptoms and don't know how I will cope with the pain if this does happen especially the TN I watched my daughter have loading doses for her deficiency and she was in terrible neurological pain for weeks Does anyone have advice Thank you so much
B12 loading dose: Hi I am diagnosed... - Pernicious Anaemi...
B12 loading dose
Hi,
I also have APs alongside of other autoimmune conditions. You say your daughter has had a loading dose so it seem's B12 deficiency run's in the family. It is the old scenario of worse before better.
If the deficiency is left untreated you could experience further debilitating symptoms. I can appreciate your concern but as you have mentioned the spinal lesions are you aware a b12 deficiency can cause subcute combined degeneration of the spinal cord ? Do you know the cause of these lesions?
Are you aware M.S is often mistaken for a B12 deficiency ?
The stroke is also interesting especialy as it ocurred in the brain stem. I suffered an ischemic stroke......... pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/329...
Are you seen by haematologist who has specialised nurses you could discuss this with ? One way or another the deficiency should not be left untreated.
P.s Do you mind if I ask whats prescribed you for your APs ?
Hi jillymo Thank you for your reply I take warfarin target range between 3 and 4 after multiple DVTs and stroke
Hi mully, I was unable to take warfarin or the heparin so was put on antiplatlet therapy together with aspirin. Like yourself I am also on the hughes forum. Iv'e had Tia's & a Stroke. Scans show small vessel changes & lesions to the brain. It's not a pleasant illness but I was fortunate to be able to see Graham Hughes some years back for advice.
With regard to the B12 injections you might find this of interest..........
Acupoint injections of vitamin B12 are shown to be more effective than carbamazepine in treating Trigeminal.
Can vitamin B12 deficiency be misdiagnosed as MS?
Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin) deficiency can result in some clinical and paraclinical characteristics similar to what is seen in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients...............

I know your frightened of adding to your pain but B12 injections might actually help some of your unpleasant symptom's.
I have both MS and Pernicious Anemia. Most of my MS lesions are spinal, as well. The B12 shots have never caused an issue with my MS. If anything, they help with the brain fog and some of the neuropathy in my legs.
