Generic B12-symptoms news article

Occasionally I see what I call a generic news article on issues pertaining to B12 deficiency. Typically the articles are not very good, misrepresenting some things, wrong about other things, and so forth.

So I was surprised today when I saw one that is not so bad. Sure, it could be better, could be more complete, etc, but my outlook is that progress is progress. Maybe the world is making progress in understanding B12.

Thanks WiscGuy,

I was actually pleasantly surprised. They mentioned several medications, cardiac problems and malabsorption diseases. When they forget or ignore these illnesses they excludes whole populations. A child can have celiac disease or Crohn’s disease so they can suffer B12D. Lots of research floating around says about it being prevalent in over 65’s because they ignore these diseases. Thank you again.

not bad but:

"So vegans and vegetarians who don’t eat any animal products should add some processed grains like fortified breads, crackers, and cereals."

Ehh no. They should take a B12 supplement at the correct dosage and frequency. Maybe I'm out of touch but I've not seen many B12 fortified breads or crackers, are they thinking of folate? A bit odd and a highly unsafe way to get your B12 I should think.

Wiscguy is in the USA . Think that cereals are probably supplemented with B12 there .But you are right , supplementing with a B12,supplement with known content is the only way.

Oatibix in the UK even has some B12 :

but not Weetabix. Strange decision.

Interesting . Thanks . Not that I’m going to eat any of these factory produced breakfast cereals . I’ll stick to porridge . I try to only eat stuff that has only been minimally “messed with” . Or more politely put , processed .

One MAJOR flaw in the article is that they do not mention pernicious anemia as a reason for being low in B12. The symptom list was good.
