Best way to address new folate deficiency?

Hello,

I'm looking for some advice on folate levels.

I've just got back a set of test results from Thriva, which were generally okay, except that I am now folate deficient (which I've never been before to my knowledge) (result was 6 nmol/L).

The reason is obvious to me now, as I made a silly error - I self inject B12 every other day (but a mix of IM and sub-cut) and I ran out of folinic acid supplements (folic acid was causing problems) some time ago and couldn't source more and then kind of just forgot.

My question is, because I'm now deficient, should I take a regular larger dose of folinic acid (I've now managed to source some) to start with to get my levels up quickly?

Any advice much appreciated 🙂

Yes that is what i would do in your shoes, up to 5mg. Watch out for any tolerance issues - i get jittery on high doses of folinic so now split it 50/50 with folic.

Have you tried methylfolate?

Btw i get folinic from these two sources. Stock is indeed not consistent. The capsules from this brand have been discontinued.

Hi ktwing

It’s so easy to overlook the supplements isn’t it but the bright side is that your B12 has been busy! I agree with Jade based on my experience.

When I started B12 injections my folate levels were similar to yours and I was put on 5mg per every other day injection for a course of 30 tablets so two months. After that improved but given another course of 5mg folic acid every other day within 6 hours of B12 injection.

It may be worth checking other cofactors too as clearly B12 has been busy.

I now inject every day and take 400ug folic acid within 6 hours … unless I forget which I sometimes do!!

Sounds like you are on top of things which is great news!

All the best

I supplement with folic acid tablets 5mg daily when I am injecting EOD or injecting every third day. The B12 and folate work hand in hand so folate used up quickly with regular B12 jabs. Your chart might also indicate your diet is short of beans and green vegetable which contain folate
