My thanks to the Pernicious Society Trustees for including "My personal story" in the Summer 2023 edition of "Cobalamin News"

I'm pleased to say that after over fifty-one years with P.A. I'm still "Clivealive" at the age of 82

Thanks Gambit62 - I think the injections are still working but I still gib at the thought that it was suggested by my doctor that I would have to eat raw liver three times a day back in 1972 when I was first diagnosed. 😅

As I stand in my back garden facing West in Aylesbury I am on the same level as the roofs of SMH

MrsTuft in reply to clivealive

Ah I am from Aylesbury, and even worked at SMH. I will smile to think of someone living successfully with PA close to me.

I go there once a year for my diabetic retinography eye test - sad to think that the damage to my left eye may have been caused by the P.A. and they were never checked down the years. "Look into my eyes! 😃

Lovely chocolate shop in Wendover. Went past it twice today on route to SMH to pick my wife up.

When I was an electrician in the early 1960s I wired about a dozen "old people's bungalows" off the left hand side going down the lower end of the high street. I wonder if they are still there?

MrsTuft profile image
MrsTuft in reply to clivealive

Near the clock tower?

clivealive profile image
clivealiveForum Support in reply to MrsTuft

I think it is now known as the Vineries,

It's 60 years ago now but seem to remember that the bungalows were "behind the shops on the left hand side of the main road going down toward the clock tower.

I also remember (more vividly) that I was on my own over there for months but that didn't matter too much as "first fix" wiring bungalows when you are six feet four is quite easy and they were quite tiny buildings. I was working for Lightfoot Brothers, Castle Street, Aylesbury back then.

An that’s Vinetrees Wendover. It’s a road of bungalows behind the top of the high street. They’re tiny but worth a fortune because of the location. I walk past there most days on my daily walk.

Well, if there is no other cluster of bungalows "behind the shops" they must be the ones I worked on back in c1961.

I was lodging in Whiteleaf at the time and would sometimes cycle in over the"switch backs" down the hill and over the railway line so perhaps I thought the site was "further down" than it was.

I also worked in the ESN school along the Hale and was amazed at a drawing of a human heart on a classroom blackboard. I never got taught that sort of thing in my Brummy Secondary Modern school

Yup - It’s definitely it!

Wow that’s a big bike ride.

My mother is from Northfield Birmingham!

clivealive profile image
clivealiveForum Support in reply to MrsTuft

Northfield's about 11 miles south west of Stechford (where I was "brung" up) and virtually on the bottom edge of the city. Your mother could probably have seen green fields - the only green I saw was what came up between the pavement slabs or what paint there was left on the front door. I "ran away" from Brum when I was 17 - immediately after the stomach surgery.

Ah my mum fled to London aged 19 and quickly lost her brummie accent as it was derided and misunderstood inthe 60’s. There was lots of green - my grandmothers house backed onto a golf course.

I ran away in the opposite direction from your Mum, down to Clevedon in "Zummerzet" in 1959 where they "torked" so slowly that I had to use one word sentences to be understood and took a packed lunch for any long conversations.

Hi Clive,

Thank you for showing us. And thank you for being such a great support. I talk to my sister on about a quarterly basis about you, trying to get her to increase her injection schedule. Using you as as a strong example that no awful circumstance.is going to suddenly happen, as we are on cyanocobalamin here.

I wish you all the best.
