Frida Kahlo and PA

I've just watched the final episode of a three part documentary on Frida Kahlo, the Mexican painter of the last century. Her painting are vivid and graphic and, as she declines and dies at 47, she paints a picture that could well be a representation of terminal PA. She is in immense pain that appears to be neuropathic and is suffering from a disintegrating spine. She has a leg amputated and is disabled and eventually prostrate. It is worth taking a look at that final episode on BBC player.

good morning, it is a brilliant series about Frida. However her illness’s were not down to PA. She contracted polio as a child and had lasting problem with her leg. Followed by a critical injury to her spine and pelvis when she was thrown from a bus in an accident and a metal pole thrust through her body. If you have the chance , watch the whole series. She was a magnificent woman.

Thanks for that information. But I understand how Orchard33 mind was working. Most of us knew nothing about B12D before experiencing it. Once you have it you start recognising how prevalent it is and how many people probably have/had it. I realised my mum probably had it. She was treated for many years for manic depression with no results. She was even given electroconvulsive therapy. No doctor thought of trying B12 although she also had other symptoms like pins and needles in her legs.

Oh charks,

I am so very sorry to read about your poor mother and how it must have affected you, other family members and friends.

I recently attended a webinar where the organisation focuses on the ‘Social Model of Disability.’ Another repeated theme is the validation of an illness. So, with regards to your mother, she was diagnosed whenever with ‘manic depression’ but did any other doctor check ? The second opinion clinician !!!

In science, for results to be valid and reliable, answers have to be repeatable. So, for your poor mum, did anyone check her blood to exclude biological cause or actually listen when she said she had pins and needles ? You know the answer as do I.

😘
