B12 injection before my hip replacement

Hi

I have B12 injections every 12 weeks from my GP but inject every 3 weeks at home.

My question is should I inject a couple of days before I go in? I feel absolutely exhausted and in continual pain. Your answers will be much appreciated.

I have it done on the 24th April.

Thankyou.

Most definitely inject before you go in . Bear in mind that general anaesthetic gas has nitrous oxide in it . Nitrous oxide depletes B12 . So you must guard against B12 depletion .

It’s great to know that one can’t overdose with B12 , so of in doubt INJECT ! All the very best for the op . Life will begin again after wards .

they’re trying to use it less now because of the issue with b12.

It’s best to tell them you have b12 deficiency and not to use nitrous oxide.

I had a pre op here in Australia a few weeks ago and was told they don’t use it now. I made sure they knew I was taking b12 every other day and had PA.

Good luck with the op. I stayed off the B12 before my hip replacement last year, as I wasn't sure what bloods they would do pre-op and didn't want to go through another 'lecture' from a medic. As it happened they didn't test that anyway and I do wish I'd have kept up to them in hindsight, so I thoroughly second wedgewood 's advice here.

The epidural thing was amazing and I was sat up having a cup of tea 30 mins later and walking around my room within an hour. The op made an amazing difference in my whole energy levels, which of course meant not having that background pain constantly too! 🤞 for a speedy recovery! 😊

I would recommend taking - I found my B12 was severely depleted after surgery (return of symptoms finally alleviated when I increased SI to eod).

I asked for details of the anaesthetic and was told nitrous oxide is rarely used now and that none of the anaesthetics used were known to affect B12 levels - but agree make sure they know re B12 deficiency. In my non-medical way I concluded my body needed more B12 to recover, or maybe the shock of surgery - or maybe it was already becoming more depleted because of stress of needing surgery! Sorted now though currently on daily SI.

My partner had his hip replaced and it’s been great. Do those exercises! Positive wishes for the op and results!
