Folate deficient

Hi all,

I had my bloods done and was told I’m folate deficient.

I’m currently taking 5mg of folic acid for 4 months, since 1st March.

I’m now injecting twice a week, as I want my folate levels to go up.

Should I go back to EOD injections?

I was previously injecting EOD, with 4mg of folate before I got my folate results.

I don’t know what to do, as I have pernicious anaemia.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Your folate levels will increase quickly on that high dose then its making sure you find a maintenence dose. Your bloods will be repeated.

The 200-400mcg daily often and be enough .

As for b12 .

If your symptoms are kept at bay injecting twice weekly ,keep it at that.

Also make sure iron/ ferritin

Vit D levels are okay

Your folate levels will increase taking folic acid whatever regime of b12 injections you are on .

Hi qwertystar

Sound advice from Nackpan. I was on 5mg folic daily for three months and now take 1 x 5mg once a week for maintenance.

Consultant told me folic uptake is most effective when taken at same time as B12 injection but you don’t NEED a B12 injection to take folic. Does that make sense?

So I would ensure that on SI days you take your folic at the same time. That’s what I do.

did your folate levels increase? If so, did you notice any improvement?

I would normally take 4mg of folic everyday, but it wasn’t enough.

yes and now on a maintenance dose only of 1x 5mg per week. But Vit D still way off the consultants target of 100 as I am still less than 50. Difference these make are to my immunity as getting fewer colds, sore throats etc and cuts healing better and quicker.
