Hit a vein while injecting

Sorry if this question has been asked a million times before, but is a B12 injection still effective if you hit a vein?

I was injecting my thigh, and I was trying to poke a different area to give my more usual places a rest and apparently hit a vein because when I pulled the needle out a fair amount of blood bubbled up and then the area sort of "balled up" and no more came out.

Thanks for your help and take good care!

Hi Cobalt. You prob actually hit a blood vessel rather than a vein . If you’re making sure you’re injecting in the proper places on your thighs ( eg not inner thighs ) and at least a hands with away from groin and knee you shouldn’t hit veins there. Blood vessels can bleed . Press a clean pad onto it if it happen again. There is info about IM injection sites . I have done this too

Thanks for that Sea-blue! Good to know that distinction! I know I've seen other posts with people concerned about aspiration, and my concern was more if the injection would still provide useful B12 to my body.

It sounds like the blood vessel is probably small enough that I most likely went all the way through it into muscle - my needles are 1 inch and I push all the way in. I always find my 'target area' by putting 1 hand on the tip of my knee and the other on my hip bone and the space in between is fair game for injections! I also try not to pass the midline of my leg - I always stay on the 'outer side' of the bone, or very close to the middle if not the outer side.

I have a small bruise today, but no harm done. I use 30 gauge needles, so the smaller size helps with smaller bruises. Thanks again!!

it's harmless. i do it from time to time. I change injection sites for that reason. but it's harmless.
