Antibiotics and b13

Does anyone have knowledge or experience of effects of amoxycillin on B12 levels? I've just taken a 7 day course, 3x500mg per day, for dental reasons, and feel as if this is just the aftermath of antibiotics or my PA symptoms have returned. Had an injection the day after the course ended. My level of B12 high before the penicillin. Any thoughts?

I've had amoxicillin for dental reasons to in the past.I stayed on my usual regime of b12 .

The antibiotics has its own side effects

I think anything on top effects us whether it's s cold or antibiotics.

With covid I did do an extra b12 injection and took extra vitamins.

Do have live natural yoghurt to combat antibiotic side effects.

Everything seems to take longer to recover.

Having had the same thing happen I think it’s two fold. The antibiotics mess up the gut flora so you need to replenish with probiotics but also if you’ve been poorly with an abscess maybe it depletes b12 slightly.

During 2018, I took Metronidazole (gum infection prior to tooth extraction) and Doxycycline ( SIBO possibility) - and both had the same effect: constant headache and really bad vertigo.

I took this to be caused by B12 depletion. Both are on a list I have of "Drugs That deplete Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin)" from the University of Maryland Medical Center.

So is Amoxycillin.

It is worth noting what has had a negative effect for you as there may be better alternatives.

Luckily, as I improved, I had no more need for antibiotics- less prone to infections and improved healing. I lost a few teeth but did not, after all, have SIBO. Teeth since have become very loose for a while -but managed to save them !

Thank you for replying. Metronidazole is a horror and Amoxicillin, although more straightforward, clearly also has an impact. Your suggestion of alternatives in the future, should I need an antibiotic, is a very helpful one.

Good to know what to avoid. Dentists and anaesthetists need to be reminded that nitrous oxide not be used if you are B12 deficient. There are alternatives so worth checking - even when it is on your record.

I experienced symptoms of POTS syndrome that took more than six months to resolve after 2 weeks of Amoxicillin. Cephlex did that to me as well. At this point I have no idea what antibiotic I could safely take. Allergic to most. Anaphylaxis to the one most used in the hospitals here in US. (Vancomycin)

Do you have link to that drug losing Chberylclaire - it might be a useful reference for the forum members in general if an antibiotic is prescribed. Thanks.

Not very good at links, but umm.edu/health/medical/altmed and drugs.com/drug-interactions might get you there. I think I just googled "drugs that deplete vitamin B12" -and printed off a couple of sensible-looking lists.
