Please advise if anyone else has experienced similar, and what treatment was.
Feeling very tired and on occasions breathless when walking uphill. Blood test showed small red blood cells, very low iron and borderline B12 deficiency. Prescribed iron tablets twice a day. Nothing prescribed for low B12. I have started a B12 supplement mouth spray by my own violition. Should Doctor have prescribed B12 injections? I'm a 62 year old female. My aunt has to have regular B12 injections and has done for years. Should I be concerned, or just ask for B12 levels to be checked again in 6 months?
Many thanks

Hi Nackapan, thanks for your reply. B12 was 136. Doctor said anything between 130 and 160 was borderline, so looks like my B12 quite low? Don't yet know if oral B12 is helping as only been taking it for a few days. Wasn't given any info on folate level. Should I ask Dr. about this? Thanks.
It would be useful to ask the receptionist for a copy of your blood tests as this will show your actual results and also a reference range against which your results should be compared.
136 appears low and it would be interesting to know what is the relevant reference range.
Yrs try and get an overall picture of what's going on .Ask the doctor/ tell the doctor if mothibg else found it surly coujd be low b12 low fokate low ferritin
Low vits d
No point in doing bloods if they are not acted on .
I was told iron fine . I pushed fir more thorough tests.
I wax then put on iron.
The breathlessness and shaking went !
We are individuals and functikn on different levels.
So 'border line ' with symptoms surely a red flag if nothing else found
Might suggest the doctor do two blood tests, Anti-parietal Cell antibodies and Intrinsic Factor Blocking Antibodies. If either or both are positive you should see a gastroenterologist.
Dear Lardycake:I would demand your Family Doctor refer you to a Hematolgist for a complete blood work up. You must know if you indeed have PA and if so you're treated accordingly.
Hello Lardycake,I believe with Pernicious Anemia the blood cells are bigger than normal not small. All your other symptoms/tests seem to be suggestive of PA, however I am a newby and not as knowledgeable as others on this site. I hope you are able to get this all sorted out soon
