Sharp stinging pain hours after injection

The b12 injection in my hip area barely hurt. Two hours later, it started stinging, burning, feeling sharp right where I got it. It is a constant pain. I’ve never had this problem before. It isn’t anything like a blood clot right? It is also tender to the touch. I get cyanocobalamin injections.

Hello Purplegirl2 I'm not an expert but have been having cyano injections every month for 50 years and get the occasional stinging sensation afterwards. Maybe you caught a nerve I don't know but I don't think you will come to any harm.

I wish you well

I’ve always had the injection in the muscles in the top of my arm or the top of my leg and stings as it goes in.

I’ve had it hurt a few hours later but the only time that happened when a nurse was a bit rough and it made me tense up a bit so it hurt as my muscles were tight could be a combination of a pinched nerve and muscle tightness.

If it’s a pinched nerve it will take a few weeks to heal up. Maybe rest if you can and avoid a lot of movement. If the area becomes numb or tingly I would go see the doctor asap or give them a call for a check up and tell them your concern.

Was it a sc b12 injection in your hip?

Perhaps the injection was just poorly-aimed and a nerve was pinched/poked. This should resolve itself within a few days. I would not be worried about a blood clot given those symptoms and the injection region, but of course get checked out if you notice any swelling, discoloration (beyond just a normal bruise), or other reactions at or around the injection site. I think you'll be just fine, but I just needed to put in that disclaimer.

At one point, however, I did have an adverse reaction to a specific brand of cyanocobalamin (Sandoz). I never found out whether the batch was contaminated or not, but I had stinging pain with injection and then lingering pain (enough to keep me awake) for several days following the injection. This tapered into general soreness that lasted weeks. I switched brands to Sterimax (same ingredients) and have not had this issue since. So if this happens again, you might want to ask which brand is being used and try something different.

Thanks everyone. It took quite a while for it to go away so maybe it was a pinched nerve or something. Perhaps I was just unlucky that time. I’m not typically nervous about injection pain unless it is different than usual. I doubt it will happen again. I notice the nurses aren’t as good at injecting in my hip as they are in my arms so maybe I’ll go back to arms for a while. I wish they’d do subcutaneous but the prescription says intramuscular so I suppose that is how it has to be.
