Link between PA and Liver function

Hey everyone, does anyone know of there is a link between PA and liver. I’ve been recently diagnosis with PA following B12 level at 128 pg/ml and positive anti-parietal test (treatment starting next week). I also had anti-smooth muscle (liver) antibodies come back as positive and my doctor states they are both linked to PA so no further action required.

Scientist, not medic.

PA is an auto-immune condition, where your body produces antibodies against 'self'. The 'best' autoantibody test for PA diagnosis is against Intrinsic Factor, which is produced by parietal cells, but it's only positive in about half of the cases of PA. Parietal cell antibodies are often found in PA, but they're not specific as they're found in other conditions as well, so it's less useful as a diagnostic test in this instance. Listen to your doctor, but it may be worth asking about the IFAb test as well. The important thing here is your low B12 level has been spotted and you're going to be treated.

Good luck!

Hi,

Sorry, I don't know much about about liver and PA but will look into it if I have time.

Each CCG/Health board in UK is likely to have its own local guidelines on management of B12 deficiency. I suggest you track down the local guidelines on B12 deficiency for your CCG/Health board and compare them with BNF, BSH and NICE CKS links.

Some local guidelines in UK are unhelpful. See blog post below about a UK area that has a poor reputation on this forum for how B12 deficiency is managed.
