It’s been almost a year since I received a positive IFAB test and started both B12 and iron supplementation. Since then, I’ve gone from being a very active and competitive runner (30-45 miles per week, though admittedly that became impossible shortly before my diagnosis) to being fairly sedentary (10-15 miles walking per week at most).
In that time, I haven’t changed my diet at all — in fact, I think I eat more calorically than ever before — lots of oil and carbs at all hours — but I’m still so tired sometimes (right before my shot’s due?), and my weight hasn’t changed at all, despite the fact that I’d definitely made my peace with possible weight gain.
My question is this: would PA or IDA be able to explain a persistent BMI of 18.5 and fatigue? Are the two related? I understand that a size 0 or 00 is maybe “desirable,” but I’m not trying to be those sizes, and I’d trade them for some energy in a heartbeat…
Thanks for your time!

Hi still_elsewhere,I’m so sorry and can empathise. I love sport, was a runner, swam, squash, yoga, tai chi. Like you last year knocked me for 6 physically. I don’t know the answer to low BMI and diet, sorry but am curious. But vitamin b12 and IDA causes our fatigue. Fatigue is so poorly understood by the general population and managing it can be a bit of a juggling act.
I've become exercises intolerant.Also fatigue/ exhaustion a problem
My activity was high before getting ill
Not competitive , not sporty and not measured.
I am told I never kept still.
Cleaning 3 houses.
Having a job.
Cycling abd walking
Swimming. Jobs for relatives who were unable to do them.
I did one small food shop yesterday.
I cooked the meal the day before as can't do both in one day !!
Terrible fatigue abd flu like symptoms from 'the trip'
So despite the enormous change in activity I'm the sane weight if not lighter than before??
For me I think the b12 speeds uo my metabolism a little si it balances out?
I do eat just as well
When unable to cook I did eat more liver ect in a ready meal with vegetables added. Hoping to get more b12 and have fewer injections!
I lost nearly a stone at the start . Having more calories!
Then put it on .
Then lost more
Now back to 'my good norm
'
My weight has rarely see sawed . So that was new.
Never had to 'diet ' or really think about it. Infact the very time I did put on weight and thought I needed more swimming ect as fatigued all the time was when unknown to me my b12 was plummeting .!I wasn't more unfit just getting deficient.
My Bmi used to be 19 when younger.
Now 22/3 I think which is fine.
Used to be part of my job in school health. Plotting it all. Healthy eating . Emotional support . When the government used it as a tool against obesity.
Seen to be doing something!
Bmi is only a guide. Always healthy people below and above 'the average 'bmi score . Noone is average after all lol
So I agree it's interesting with so much in activity in my case I've not put on weight.
My daughter did.
She has 10 weekly b12 Injections though?
I'm at the stage I just want to be able to do more whatever my weight!
Depending on how tired you get before your Injection is due you may need to look at the frequency you inject.
If you read more posts the ideal if yiu xsn get it is to inject before symptoms return.
